It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Bolton Wanderers this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“If you cannot run for the shirt, somebody else will wear it.” No name was used and none was needed; every player in that room knew who it was for.

The view from the dugout
“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 1‑3 defeat, delivered by James Reid to a room that had heard them before.
Successful dribbles: 14. There is a particular sort of despair on a full-back's face by the seventieth minute, and it was on display.

Akin Famewo is still being punished for one mistake
Nobody will confirm it and the team sheets confirm it every week. One error has bought him a spell as second choice that is already longer than the error deserved.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Bolton Wanderers know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Veracruz this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and René Flores was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
Nobody at Veracruz will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.
A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Alejandro Arana has written the date down.
He looks like a man who lives here now rather than one who is working here. It took most of a season, and at Veracruz the difference is visible from the back of the stand.
They sit in position 13 and they will be waiting. Away form is where a season shows its true character, and this side has a point to make about its own.
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
The crowd waited for a goal that never came. Blackpool defended in numbers and left with what they came for, and the two sides could be playing still without troubling a scorer.
“Things were said to me before I signed. I am not going to repeat them, but I remember all of them.” Bolton Wanderers have not answered, which is an answer of sorts.
It happens to all of them and it is still the hardest paragraph a local paper has to write. 38 years old, 3 points down on where he was, and a body that has started charging interest on a career.
“I have tried. I have really tried, and every day I wake up in the wrong place.” Nobody at Bolton Wanderers can coach that out of a man, and nobody there is pretending to.
Clubs make promises constantly and the page usually only hears about them when they are broken. This one was honoured, and the dressing room noticed that faster than any supporter did.
Nobody at Bolton Wanderers will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.
A year in and the language has not come, the city has not opened up, and he eats alone more often than anybody at Bolton Wanderers would like to admit. It is showing on Saturdays.
“I did not come here to warm up in front of people.” He is out of contract eventually, he is old enough to count the weeks, and Bolton Wanderers will have to give him a reason to stay or an exit.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Lee Gregory trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Bolton Wanderers can pretend not to have heard.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. KV Kortrijk have kept their man, and Bolton Wanderers go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 22-year-old it feels ownership of. Samuel Iling-Junior has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
Sonny Sharples-Ahmed and a teammate went at it, and not about football. Training grounds are small places and a long season makes them smaller.

The manager’s verdict
“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” James Reid kept it short after the 1‑0 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.
He trains hard, says the right things and goes home to an empty flat. Nobody at Bolton Wanderers has done anything wrong, which is exactly what makes it so difficult to fix.
The shape wanted a different profile against this opponent, which is a real football answer and no comfort at all to the man it is about. He did nothing wrong and he did not play.
A bone, which is the one injury with a calendar attached. Bolton Wanderers will name a return date and, unusually for this business, will probably be right about it.
“I have given everything here and I need a new challenge.” The request is formal, and the relationship will never be quite the same again.

Bolton Wanderers close the window on a squad of their own making
12 in and 3 out, and no more changes for months. The manager has what he has, the supporters have their opinion of it, and the table will have the last word.
Marco Alvarez and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Bolton Wanderers know which stage they are at.
“There is a gap, and pretending there is not helps nobody.” Neither side has moved, and the calendar is working for exactly one of them.

13 new faces, and Bolton Wanderers are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
Peterborough United next, and one man in the Bolton Wanderers dressing room knows their training ground better than his own. The reception will tell him what they thought of him.
A bone, which is the one injury with a calendar attached. Bolton Wanderers will name a return date and, unusually for this business, will probably be right about it.
The deal with Veracruz is done in every sense but the one that puts him on the pitch. Nothing goes wrong at this stage, except on the occasions when it does.
Successful dribbles: 21. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Bolton Wanderers asked and Estudiantes said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
200 games in these colours. Service of that kind gets rarer every season, and the crowd knows it.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 1‑2 James Reid left the room before anybody could ask which.
He is not being dropped. There is simply nowhere in the formation Bolton Wanderers are playing to put a man who does what he does, which is a harder thing to be told than any team sheet.
$25.1M is a serious amount of money and it does not play centre-forward. Everybody in the dressing room knows who used to be looked at when it went wrong.
Fee agreed, wages agreed, and Bolton Wanderers waiting with a shirt. Nobody at Veracruz is pretending otherwise, and the supporters have stopped asking whether and started asking when.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Veracruz, and it is not being withdrawn.

Supporters turn on the $25.1M sale of Ivan Herrera
He is going to Inter, the club has $25.1M it did not have on Friday, and the phone-ins have already decided how they feel about that. Selling well and selling somebody they loved are not the same skill.
$2.4M was the most the club would pay and Leon were asking for more. Deals like this are revived in the last week of a window roughly half the time, and everybody involved knows it.
Everything agreed with Monterrey, everything agreed with the player; a doctor is the only person left to persuade. The photograph is a day or two away.
A 4‑3 win over Santos Laguna, earned rather than given, and the sort of afternoon that sends everyone home talking about next week instead of this one.
Defending was optional and nobody took up the option. 7 goals between Veracruz and Santos Laguna, and not one of the people who paid to be there will ask for the money back.
Add another name to the list: Dender have asked the question everybody in the game has been asking about Santiago Ramirez. The answer from Veracruz has not changed — yet.
The hardest thing about being 17 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Fernando Pineda did not need any: 7.80, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.
The offer went to Leon this week and it is theirs to answer. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loud the door closes.
Veracruz asked and Santos Laguna said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
The number the board signed off was not enough. It has been asked again and raised its own offer to $2.5M — a club that wants Valentín Gauthier enough to be asked twice.
A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. Veracruz have done the hard part with Toluca, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
Ivan Herrera was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
