90 days on the announcement, and a year of quiet, unwatched rehabilitation behind it. Waitakere United lose a player for a season; he loses something harder to name.
The clubs have settled the fee and he has settled his wages. What remains is a medical and a photograph, and around Waitakere United people have started saying his name in the past tense.
Nobody upstairs has said anything, which is the loudest thing they could do. Results buy silence in this game; the account at Waitakere United is running low.
The deadline has passed and the squad is the squad. 0 arrived, 7 left, and everything else printed about this club last month was a rumour that stayed one.
The deal with Auckland City is done in every sense but the one that puts him on the pitch. Nothing goes wrong at this stage, except on the occasions when it does.
Jai Payne was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Epeli Vunibola is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
“Some decisions take a long time. This one took ten minutes, and most of that was finding a pen.” Liberato Barbarouses and Waitakere United agree another 3 years.
“I was told straight, and I would rather have it straight.” The manager at Waitakere United has been clear about where Owen Singh stands, which is more than many ever get.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Waitakere United this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Epeli Vunibola was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
“I never wanted to be anywhere else. There is unfinished business here.” Owen Singh commits to Waitakere United for another 3 years.

the manager faces the questions
“We were not good enough today and I am not going to dress it up.” the manager after 1‑2, in the tone of a man who knows the next question and does not intend to answer it.
The hardest thing about being 17 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Tommy Sutton did not need any: 7.96, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Cameron Rufer is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
“The easiest signature of my career.” Owen Singh and Waitakere United agree another 3 years, and the manager can plan around him rather than about him.
A 1‑1 draw with WaiBOP United leaves the dressing room somewhere between relief and regret.

the manager: “We have to be better”
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 1‑1 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.

Tommy Sutton, 17, is the weekend’s best young player
Measured against every other kid in the division and first among them. The senior award is where Waitakere United would like this to lead.
The one version of being left out a player cannot argue with, and the one he takes worst. Somebody else has been better and the team sheet says so, in public, every week until it changes.
In brief
The dugoutThe manager has not finished forgetting Cameron Garbett's mistake
Two goals and a mark of 9.08 to go with them. Strikers are judged on afternoons like this one and remembered for far fewer of them than people imagine.
A season average of 7.07 at an age when most of his year group are still in the youth team. Waitakere United know what they have, and so, by now, does everybody else.
Defending was optional and nobody took up the option. 7 goals between Waitakere United and Hawke's Bay United, and not one of the people who paid to be there will ask for the money back.

Cameron Rufer falls out with a teammate over standards
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.

Cameron Rufer was on a different afternoon to everybody else
8.19. There are performances a supporter describes to somebody who was not there and cannot quite convey; this was one, and the number does not help either.
Both clubs in the mire, one fixture between them, and a ground that will be louder and more frightened than at any point in the season. Waitakere United know what is at stake and so does everybody in the away end.
“Some decisions take a long time. This one took ten minutes, and most of that was finding a pen.” Stefan Colvey and Waitakere United agree another 3 years.
The words a physio says slowly. 65 days is what the club will announce and everybody who has heard this diagnosis before knows the number is the least of it: the knee comes back before the player does.
“I listened, I thought about it, and I am staying. That is the whole story.” The clubs had agreed a fee. Michael Barbarouses had not agreed to go, which turned out to be the part that mattered.
The offer from Team Wellington for Oliver Nelson was heard out and sent back the same day. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loudly the door closes.
A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. Waitakere United have done the hard part with Southern United, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 17 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
Epeli Vunibola was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
