Some goals win a match and some take one off somebody else. Corey Hertzog scored in the 88th minute, Zebbug Rangers had already begun thinking about the journey home, and Swieqi United took the lot.
There is an age at which every good afternoon gets described as a throwback, which is unfair and also accurate. 9.44 at 36, and nobody on the pitch was better.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Swieqi United, and it is not being withdrawn.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Juan Cruz Aguilar was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 22-year-old it feels ownership of. Sfundo Shezi has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
Marked 8.43 — the sort of number a correspondent writes down twice to be sure. Everything he tried came off, and what he did not try was not worth trying.
In brief
Player ratingsNinety minutes of Sfundo Shezi at his very best
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Juan Cruz Aguilar was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
There is a level at which a footballer stops being tested and starts being contained, and he reached it some time ago. Swieqi United know it, and so does everybody who watches him.

The view from the dugout
“We did not lose. Some weeks that is all you get, and I would rather have the point than not.” Robert Attard chose the glass-half-full version of 0‑0; the supporters left with the other one.

Somebody else is better right now than Samuel Okoh
The team sheet says it in public every week until it changes. The only version of being dropped a footballer cannot argue with, and the one he takes hardest.
The shape wanted a different profile against this opponent, which is a real football answer and no comfort at all to the man it is about. He did nothing wrong and he did not play.
4 goals in 9 games at St. Andrews — numbers that travel home faster than he does. Somebody at Swieqi United updates a spreadsheet every Monday, and it makes better reading each week.
“The easiest signature of my career.” Cristian Correa and Swieqi United agree another 4 years, and the manager can plan around him rather than about him.
He is 22 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Every club pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time it has been tried.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Swieqi United know which stage they are at.

5 new faces, and Swieqi United are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.

The manager’s verdict
“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” Robert Attard kept it short after the 1‑0 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.
At 36, 3 points below where he was, and a body that has started charging interest. It happens to all of them and it is still the hardest paragraph on this page.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Swieqi United know which stage they are at.
A few words of the language, a friend at the next peg, and a training ground that has stopped feeling foreign. Nothing measurable, and everything visible on Saturdays.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 20 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
“I have given this everything, but my family is not here and neither am I, not really.” A footballer can be coached out of bad form. Nobody has ever been coached out of this, and Swieqi United know it.
A mark of 7.92, and nobody in the ground would argue with it. He was involved in everything that mattered and most of what did not.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 1‑2 Robert Attard left the room before anybody could ask which.
Marked 7.71. Ask anyone leaving the ground what settled it and you will get one name, which is the only award that has ever really counted.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Robert Attard, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
Nobody at Swieqi United is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
Successful dribbles: 20. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.

Words at Swieqi United training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Juan Cruz Aguilar is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Rafael Bugeja is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
7 attempts, none of them in. He got into the right places all afternoon, which is the hard part, and did the easy part badly — and that is the version of a bad day a manager can live with.
He used to wear the other shirt. On Saturday he plays against Sirens in this one, and whatever he says this week about it being just another game will be untrue.
The deadline has passed and the squad is the squad. 11 arrived, 9 left, and everything else printed about this club last month was a rumour that stayed one.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
“It was not right for me. I am not going to explain why to anybody except the people I owe an explanation to.” A deal agreed between two clubs, and a player who declined to be part of it.
The accountants will call it good business and they will be right, which is not the point anybody outside the boardroom is making. Kian Leonardi was one of the reasons people came, and $45.0K does not replace that by itself.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Juventud have kept their man, and Swieqi United go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Kevin Farrugia has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Etienne Azzopardi has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.
The offer from Tarxien Rainbows for Kian Leonardi was heard out and sent back the same day. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loudly the door closes.
“Some decisions take a long time. This one took ten minutes, and most of that was finding a pen.” Juan Cruz Aguilar and Swieqi United agree another 3 years.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
The phone has started ringing about Kojo Okle again, and this time the name on the line is Melita. Swieqi United are listening politely and promising nothing.
