A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. União have done the hard part with Atlético Mineiro, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
Jardisson was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Signings arrive with a picture of the club in their head, and this one’s picture was bigger than the building. He will play well and he will be gone, in that order, and everybody knows it.
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Felipe Cantes is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
The injury that keeps coming back, keeps being rushed back from, and quietly costs more careers than the dramatic ones. 19 days is the estimate; the honest figure depends on whether anybody is patient.
The demotion a club never announces and a dressing room always notices. Renato is further from the side than he was, and the reason will not be given until he asks.

A place in the month's best eleven for Renan Gustavo
Four or five weekends of consistency, judged against everybody in the division doing his job. Renan Gustavo has come out of that comparison in the side, and União have had the benefit of every one of those afternoons.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Jardisson trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
“The manager did not use many words, and he did not need to.” Lucas Covolan has his answer from União; what he does with it is the next window’s story.
He asked about his future and was given an answer with minutes in it. The manager has now made a promise in a building where promises are remembered, and the clock on it has started.
The shrug has gone, the language is coming, and he now argues in training like somebody who expects to be here next year. Half a signing's value is this and none of it appears on a fee.
Everything agreed with another club, everything agreed with the player; a doctor is the only person left to persuade. The photograph is a day or two away.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at União this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Igor Monteiro after the 1‑1 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.
4 shots, and a count that reads like a good afternoon until you check the other column. Strikers survive weeks like this on the understanding that the chances keep arriving; the day they stop is the day it becomes a problem.
Two goals and a mark of 8.06 to go with them. Strikers are judged on afternoons like this one and remembered for far fewer of them than people imagine.
Jardisson was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
The new man at União has worked with Bruno Morais before and it went well. He arrives with a view of the player already formed, which is worth more than any pre-season.

21 new faces, and União are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
“That is what I want every week. Not the result, the way they went about it.” The manager, after 2‑1, already talking about the next one.

Somebody else is better right now than Lucas Daros
The team sheet says it in public every week until it changes. The only version of being dropped a footballer cannot argue with, and the one he takes hardest.
3 wins on the spin now, and the question has changed from whether the run ends to who ends it. Confidence like this cannot be bought; it has to be earned exactly this way.
He is 19 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. União will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.
A mark of 7.90, and nobody in the ground would argue with it. He was involved in everything that mattered and most of what did not.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Igor Monteiro, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 16 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.
0‑10 against Grêmio, and the road stops here. Cup exits are quick deaths — no second leg, no next week, just the league from now until May.

União are taken apart by Grêmio — and the town wants answers
It finished 0-10. A cup exit is a disappointment; this was a public dismantling, and the difference between the two is the number of people who will still be talking about it in August.
He left as a boy and has come back still knowing where the away end is. Most signings have to be explained to a town; this one needed a photograph and nothing else.

Nobody could stop scoring
10 goals. Both benches spent the second half looking at each other rather than at the pitch. Purists will complain about União and Grêmio in equal measure; everybody else had a wonderful time.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Aparecidense this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 0‑1, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Raphael Luz’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and Aparecidense needing him to play as if none of it matters.
