The mood at Napredak has turned into something else
Supporters who sing when it goes badly are supporters. Supporters who gather afterwards are a problem, and everybody inside the building knows which of the two this now is.
Napredak had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at Hradec Králové, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Napredak this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.

Words at Napredak training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Ivan Pavlić is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. CSKA Moscow have kept their man, and Napredak go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
Marked 6.58 on 11 actions at both ends of the pitch. Midfielders like this get described as unspectacular by people who have never tried to play against one.
The clubs have settled the fee and he has settled his wages. What remains is a medical and a photograph, and around Vojvodina people have started saying his name in the past tense.
The offer from Qizilqum for David Milićević was heard out and sent back the same day. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loudly the door closes.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Vojvodina can pretend not to have heard.
The name of Milutin Vidosavljević has come up in conversations Vojvodina were not part of. Nothing formal, nothing signed — but nothing about it accidental either.
Luka Milivojević and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.

4 appearances and 0 goals is not a season, it is a year somebody has lost. Whether that is his fault, the borrowing club's or the people who arranged it is the argument the next few weeks will have.
Every manager keeps a short list in his head of the men he wants on the pitch when the stakes rise, and it is never published. The team sheets for the big afternoons say Mateja Bubanj is on it.

Every club in football pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time somebody has tried it.
“I have tried. I have really tried, and every day I wake up in the wrong place.” Nobody at Agia Napa can coach that out of a man, and nobody there is pretending to.
Football clubs borrow; that is not the story. Borrowing more than the facility allows is, because from here it is the owner's money or somebody else's decision, and neither of those belongs to the board.
Nobody will confirm this and nothing else explains the last month of selections. A costly error buys a player a period of being second choice that is always longer than the error was.

“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Agia Napa, and it is not being withdrawn.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Nobody will confirm this and nothing else explains the last month of selections. A costly error buys a player a period of being second choice that is always longer than the error was.
Nothing in writing and nothing in public: a word about playing time, given face to face at Agia Napa. The team sheets over the next month will show whether it was worth having.
“I am grateful for the games, but I did not become a footballer to be somebody else's spare part.” He wants to be at Napredak, and 0 appearances in 13 say he has earned the hearing.
9 shut-outs in 21 games. A goalkeeper’s loan is judged on the afternoons when nothing happened at all, and Bogdan Marinković has been having a lot of them.
Every manager keeps a short list in his head of the men he wants on the pitch when the stakes rise, and it is never published. The team sheets for the big afternoons say Dejan Meleg is on it.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Slavoljub Srnić trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Napredak know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
Nemanja Stevanović has done the arithmetic and does not like the answer. Nothing corrodes a squad faster, and no club has ever solved it by explaining the wage structure to a footballer.
“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
27 points in position 12: too many to go down, too few to go anywhere. The honest description of a season like this is a shrug, and the supporters have already given it.
“Things were said to me before I signed. I am not going to repeat them, but I remember all of them.” Agia Napa have not answered, which is an answer of sorts.
Nobody upstairs has said anything, which is the loudest thing they could do. Results buy silence in this game; the account at Agia Napa is running low.
Danilo Miladinović was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
“Some mornings you wake up and you are still a long way from everything you know.” It is not the football and it never was; Agia Napa are dealing with a man who wants a different country.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
“I watch every Napredak game from here. That says everything about where my head is.” The loan at Panionios runs its course, but his heart never made the trip.
21 appearances at Agia Napa and the goals have stopped going in. Napredak lent out a goalkeeper and are watching somebody else’s season get better every week.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Ognjen Ajdar was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
A year in and the language has not come, the city has not opened up, and he eats alone more often than anybody at Napredak would like to admit. It is showing on Saturdays.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 22 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
“I have given this everything, but my family is not here and neither am I, not really.” A footballer can be coached out of bad form. Nobody has ever been coached out of this, and Agia Napa know it.
The gap in the accounts was filled from upstairs again. Supporters are entitled to be grateful and to ask what happens the month it is not, and both feelings arrive together.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Onisiforos Rousias. 2‑0 against Digenis Morfou, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
“Nobody here is above being told.” It was not said with a name attached, but the dressing room can count, and so can everybody who was listening.

“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” Jason Ioannou kept it short after the 2‑0 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.

“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Napredak can pretend not to have heard.
At 36, 3 points below where he was, and a body that has started charging interest. It happens to all of them and it is still the hardest paragraph on this page.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Napredak this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
5 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.
The manager has re-ordered his thinking and Vladimir Savić has come out of it lower. He will be told it is temporary, and the players who have heard that before will avoid his eye.
20 appearances at Agia Napa and the goals have stopped going in. Napredak lent out a goalkeeper and are watching somebody else’s season get better every week.

Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the team. 6 saves, several of them the sort nobody expects to see stopped, and a scoreline that flatters everybody in front of him.
Successful dribbles: 22. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Nemanja Žunić was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.

It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
He used to wear the other shirt. On Saturday he plays against Vojvodina in this one, and whatever he says this week about it being just another game will be untrue.
“I did not come here to warm up in front of people.” He is out of contract eventually, he is old enough to count the weeks, and Napredak will have to give him a reason to stay or an exit.
Numbers do not stay secret in a dressing room and never have. He is not asking for more than he is worth; he is asking why somebody beside him is worth more, and at Napredak that is a harder question to answer.
2-6, and long before the end the away end had switched from encouragement to something considerably more pointed. Nobody rings a phone-in about losing narrowly.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Agia Napa this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
8 goals. Both benches spent the second half looking at each other rather than at the pitch. Purists will complain about Agia Napa and Apollon in equal measure; everybody else had a wonderful time.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
He is 21 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Beaten 6 times, 4 saves, and an afternoon that will go on his record whether it was his fault or the defence’s. It is the quiet unfairness of the position.
A defender on the scoresheet, which happens rarely enough that everybody in the ground remembers who took the corner. 1 for him, and a mark of 7.71 for the rest of it.
Marios Peratikos was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Danilo Miladinović was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.

11 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.
“The players deserve the credit. My job was easy today.” It was not, and everybody in the room knew it; after 3‑1, Jason Ioannou could afford to be generous.
In brief
The dugoutSomebody else is better right now than Rodrigo Dias
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 8 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Agia Napa, and it is not being withdrawn.
Bogdan Marinković and a teammate went at it, and not about football. Training grounds are small places and a long season makes them smaller.

Words at Agia Napa training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Danilo Miladinović is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Agia Napa asked and AE Kition said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
At 22 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Danilo Miladinović. 1‑0 against AEZ Zakakiou, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
Nobody makes a documentary about a hamstring and everybody in the game fears one. Agia Napa will be careful with the return date, because the second one is always worse than the first.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Agia Napa can pretend not to have heard.

Deadline passes with 25 signed and 1 gone
That is the business done at Agia Napa until the window opens again. Whether it was enough will be answered on Saturdays rather than in a column, and the first Saturday is close.
The instruction has come from upstairs rather than from the dugout, which is the version of this conversation no manager enjoys. Somebody in that squad is now available whether the man who picks the team thinks so or not.

“We keep meeting, and we keep leaving the room with the same numbers we walked in with.” Another round of talks at Agia Napa, another week without a signature from Rodrigo Dias.
The system has changed and his position has not. A footballer can improve his form; he cannot improve the manager’s formation, and that is the whole of the problem.
Every footballer has an answer to the question about his boyhood club, and most of them never get to act on it. Tiago Gonçalves has, at Agia Napa, and the first month will show what that does to a man.
A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. Agia Napa have done the hard part with Napredak, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
The clubs had agreed and the player had not. A snub, and a public one: another club keep him, and the supporters here are left wondering what he had heard about the place.

“The manager did not use many words, and he did not need to.” Ilias Melkas has his answer from Agia Napa; what he does with it is the next window’s story.
A year in and the city has not opened up, the language has not come, and lunch is eaten alone more often than anybody at Agia Napa would admit. It shows on Saturdays.

Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. AE Kition have kept their man, and Agia Napa go back to a list with one name crossed off it.

A loan enquiry to Plateau United: cover, or a look at somebody the club cannot afford to buy yet. Either way the answer will come back inside the week.

The phone has started ringing about Bogdan Marinković again, and this time the name on the line is Agia Napa. Napredak are listening politely and promising nothing.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑1 Novak Lukic left the room before anybody could ask which.
He used to wear the other shirt. On Saturday he plays against Radnik Surdulica in this one, and whatever he says this week about it being just another game will be untrue.
