Tigran Sumbulyan and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Emil Papikyan was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
“Some mornings you wake up and you are still a long way from everything you know.” It is not the football and it never was; Shirak-2 are dealing with a man who wants a different country.
Tigran Sumbulyan was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.

Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 7 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Shirak-2 this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Shirak-2 know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at Shirak-2, and both men came out saying it was fine.
“I am not asking anybody to be better than they are. I am asking everybody to be as good as they are, every week.” Said out loud, in front of everybody, and the room at Shirak-2 was different afterwards.
Next up on the road: Ararat-2, position 10. The supporters who go will talk about it all week and the ones who do not will check their phones at ten to five.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Tigran Ghazaryan. 1‑0 against Noah-2, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Grigor Hakobyan, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
2 months left, and both sides know what that means: every week without a signature, the fee Shirak-2 could ask drops and the wages Emil Papikyan can ask rise.
Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Emil Papikyan’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and Shirak-2 needing him to play as if none of it matters.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Tigran Sumbulyan signs something — a contract at Shirak-2 or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
Successful dribbles: 10. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
“If we are going to be beaten, let it not be because somebody in here could not be bothered.” He stood up and said it in front of everybody, which is a thing a squad remembers about a man for years.
A year in and the language has not come, the city has not opened up, and he eats alone more often than anybody at Shirak-2 would like to admit. It is showing on Saturdays.
0‑3 to Lernayin Artsakh, and it was every bit as bad as the number suggests. There are defeats you argue about and defeats you apologise for; this was the second kind.

100 games in this shirt, through managers and relegations and everything else. Service like it is disappearing from the game and the crowd knows what it is watching.
The music was off and the showers ran late. What was said in that dressing room stays there, but Saturday will publish the minutes.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑3 Grigor Hakobyan left the room before anybody could ask which.
“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
“I pick players who do the work. All of it.” No name was spoken; every camera still turned to Sokrat Hovhannisyan, and the manager let it.

Gagik Akulyan is still being punished for one mistake
Nobody will confirm it and the team sheets confirm it every week. One error has bought him a spell as second choice that is already longer than the error deserved.
A shoot-out is remembered by its ending, and this one ends with Utku Yuvakuran: 1 kept out, and a set of supporters who will describe every one of them for the next twenty years.
Vinko Soldo and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
A mark of 7.84, and nobody in the ground would argue with it. He was involved in everything that mattered and most of what did not.

“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Serdar Aktorkoglu, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
“The manager did not use many words, and he did not need to.” Yekta Sönmez has his answer from Pendikspor; what he does with it is the next window’s story.
