Words at Horizonte training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Vinícius Araujo is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Horizonte asked and Maricá said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
“I have done everything asked of me in training and it has not changed a thing on a Saturday.” The most familiar complaint in football, and one Horizonte will have to answer with minutes or with a transfer.
The minutes were not coming at Horizonte, so he will look for them at São Luiz. Everybody involved calls it development; for the player it is simply a chance to play.
The last thing about a transfer that is still about the player is his signature on his own terms, and it is there. Horizonte have lost him in all but the paperwork.
An individual honour is a strange thing in a team game, and the best of them are never argued with. He has had the sort of year that ends with his name being read out, and Horizonte have had the benefit of it.
Horizonte had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at GAS, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.
Horizonte have made the call to Atlético Goianiense. No fee, a share of the wages, and a spare shirt in the position where the squad has been thinnest all season.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Trator trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. São Luiz have done the hard part with Horizonte, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Éder Gomes has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.
Henrique Moritz is 17, and São Luiz have signed him for the player he will be rather than the one he is. The first team can wait; the point of a deal like this is the years it buys.

Thiago Mendes is still being punished for one mistake
Nobody will confirm it and the team sheets confirm it every week. One error has bought him a spell as second choice that is already longer than the error deserved.
“It was not right for me. I am not going to explain why to anybody except the people I owe an explanation to.” A deal agreed between two clubs, and a player who declined to be part of it.

The award is a small thing with a heavy meaning: for four weeks nobody in this division did his job better. Horizonte have the trophy on a shelf and the player in the side.
A month is long enough that nobody gets in by accident. Mateus Mendes is in the division's best eleven for it, which is a quieter compliment than an award and a more reliable one.
It will be explained as a change for the team and it may even be one. Nobody who has worn one believes that, and neither does the man who has just had it taken away.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Horizonte know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
He is 22 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.

The manager’s verdict
“I am frustrated, honestly. We did enough to win and we did not win.” Caio Figueiredo was not hiding it after 1‑1, and nobody in the Horizonte dressing room was either.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
10 shots, and a count that reads like a good afternoon until you check the other column. Strikers survive weeks like this on the understanding that the chances keep arriving; the day they stop is the day it becomes a problem.
