It has stopped being a mood in the stands and started being something organised. Boards can ignore a bad atmosphere for a long time; they cannot ignore this stage of it for very long at all.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Newcastle Jets can pretend not to have heard.
“Some decisions take a long time. This one took ten minutes, and most of that was finding a pen.” Dalton Wilkins and Newcastle Jets agree another 2 years.
Dalton Wilkins and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Nobody will confirm it and the team sheets confirm it every week. One error has bought him a spell as second choice that is already longer than the error deserved.
What was said behind closed doors has now been said in front of a microphone. Everybody at Newcastle Jets can do the arithmetic, including the man it is aimed at.
The whole football department in one room on a weekday morning. Nothing was announced afterwards, which is what a board announces when it has run out of patience.
Terms are settled between the clubs and the rest is paperwork and a photograph. Around Newcastle Jets they have already started talking about him in the past tense.
“The easiest signature of my career.” Dalton Wilkins and Newcastle Jets agree another 2 years, and the manager can plan around him rather than about him.
Every squad is half players the manager chose and half players he inherited. Gabriel Cléùr was chosen, the man who chose him has gone, and he starts again from nothing under the next one.
A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Aaron Walsh has written the date down.
Not a new contract, not a new number: a new place in the manager’s thinking, which is the only promotion in football that actually matters. Jake Bennett has moved up it.
A bad atmosphere can be waited out. A group of people meeting afterwards to decide what to do about it cannot, and everybody in the building knows which stage this is.
Fee agreed, terms agreed, medical booked. Nicholas Moore will be somebody else’s player by the weekend, and around Newcastle Jets the goodbyes have quietly begun.

Words at Newcastle Jets training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Ben Reid is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.

Everybody saw it before anybody said it. At 34 the numbers say 3 points down on what he was, and the question for Newcastle Jets is how to handle a man they owe a great deal.

5 academy players handed senior numbers at Newcastle Jets
The morning the pathway stops being a brochure and becomes a team sheet. Most of them will not be here in three years; all of them have already done the hard part, which was getting to today.

Position 12 and 6 points, and the table gets read bottom-up in this part of town. The calendar has stopped being a schedule and started being a countdown.

“Nobody here is above being told.” It was not said with a name attached, but the dressing room can count, and so can everybody who was listening.

Nothing in writing and nothing in public: a word about playing time, given face to face at Newcastle Jets. The team sheets over the next month will show whether it was worth having.
In brief
BoardroomThe Newcastle Jets production line keeps running
It has stopped being a mood in the stands and started being something organised. Boards can ignore a bad atmosphere for a long time; they cannot ignore this stage of it for very long at all.
The clubs have agreed terms, and what remains is formality: a medical, a photograph, a signature. Nobody at Newcastle Jets is pretending he will be back in the shirt.
Dalton Wilkins was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.

Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Harrison Wood is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Jackson Thomas has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.
The academy exists for exactly this morning. Jarrod McLaren has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.
