The clubs have agreed terms, and what remains is formality: a medical, a photograph, a signature. Nobody at Javor-Matis is pretending he will be back in the shirt.

Javor-Matis close the window on a squad of their own making
15 in and 14 out, and no more changes for months. The manager has what he has, the supporters have their opinion of it, and the table will have the last word.
Everything agreed with another club, everything agreed with the player; a doctor is the only person left to persuade. The photograph is a day or two away.
Javor-Matis had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at PAOK, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.

Jug Stanojev falls out with a teammate over standards
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Ognjen Lukić was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Javor-Matis can pretend not to have heard.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 18 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
Add another name to the list: Tekstilac Odžaci have asked the question everybody in the game has been asking about Andrej Mandić. The answer from Javor-Matis has not changed — yet.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Lazar Mićić was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
Tom Edwards and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
A loan enquiry to Universitatea Cluj: cover, or a look at somebody the club cannot afford to buy yet. Either way the answer will come back inside the week.

Words at Javor-Matis training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Jovan Popović is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Clubs make promises constantly and the page usually only hears about them when they are broken. This one was honoured, and the dressing room noticed that faster than any supporter did.
Nobody will confirm it and the team sheets confirm it every week. One error has bought him a spell as second choice that is already longer than the error deserved.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Benjamin Acquah signs something — a contract at Javor-Matis or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.

“I am grateful for the games, but I did not become a footballer to be somebody else's spare part.” He wants to be at Javor-Matis, and 6 appearances in 36 say he has earned the hearing.

“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Lazar Mićić trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
He asked about his future and was given an answer with minutes in it. The manager has now made a promise in a building where promises are remembered, and the clock on it has started.

SquadThe training reports on Andrej Mandić are not good

Every manager keeps a short list in his head of the men he wants on the pitch when the stakes rise, and it is never published. The team sheets for the big afternoons say Nemanja Đokić is on it.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Mateja Zuvić trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Mass Sise signs something — a contract at Javor-Matis or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Lazar Mićić has written the date down.

4 goals in 27 games at FAP Priboj — numbers that travel home faster than he does. Somebody at Javor-Matis updates a spreadsheet every Monday, and it makes better reading each week.
“Nobody here is above being told.” It was not said with a name attached, but the dressing room can count, and so can everybody who was listening.

“I was told straight, and I would rather have it straight.” The manager at Javor-Matis has been clear about where Dimitrije Stevanović stands, which is more than many ever get.
“I have done everything asked of me in training and it has not changed a thing on a Saturday.” The most familiar complaint in football, and one Javor-Matis will have to answer with minutes or with a transfer.
Nobody will confirm this and nothing else explains the last month of selections. A costly error buys a player a period of being second choice that is always longer than the error was.
Nobody at Javor-Matis will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.
Marked 6.80 on 13 actions at both ends of the pitch. Midfielders like this get described as unspectacular by people who have never tried to play against one.
Jovan Popović and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
A midfielder is measured on whether the team functions when he is on the pitch, which is nearly impossible to see and completely obvious in retrospect. 11 actions, 6.44, and a manager who will not be substituting him again in a hurry.
“I have done everything asked of me in training and it has not changed a thing on a Saturday.” The most familiar complaint in football, and one Javor-Matis will have to answer with minutes or with a transfer.
A player who expected to start watched it instead. The manager will call it a decision for the team; Milan Ilić will call it something else in private.
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.

Fee agreed, wages agreed, and TSC waiting with a shirt. Nobody at Javor-Matis is pretending otherwise, and the supporters have stopped asking whether and started asking when.
There is a particular kind of quiet from an away end watching one man score twice. Mass Sise provided it, and the 8.45 beside his name is if anything generous to everybody else.
The offer from Kabel for Ognjen Lukić was heard out and sent back the same day. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loudly the door closes.
Javor-Matis had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at Crvena Zvezda, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.
Footballers are asked about their boyhood club so often that nobody listens to the answer. Tom Edwards has just signed for Javor-Matis, and for once the answer mattered.
Nothing happens for months and then he simply arrives, at no cost, having signed a pre-contract while still turning out for somebody else. It is the least dramatic way to sign a footballer and frequently the shrewdest.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Krasnodar have kept their man, and Javor-Matis go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
