Bristol Rovers wanted more than $100.0K and the board would not go there. Walked away, for now, which in a transfer window means until somebody blinks.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Southampton have kept their man, and Salford City go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
Successful dribbles: 16. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.

A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. Salford City have done the hard part with Burnley, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
Terms were offered and declined. Whether it was the wages, the role or the town, nobody at Liverpool is saying, and nobody at Salford City is enjoying the guessing.

Salford City spend $3.3M on the signing the town wanted
It is the rarest sequence in football: supporters ask for something, and the club goes and does it. $3.3M for Edo Kayembe, and for one week nobody is complaining about anything.
6 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.
Mathematically certain, and nobody in this town is going to bed early. Whatever else happened this season, it finishes a division above where it started.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Salford City can pretend not to have heard.
Middlesbrough will keep picking him until June and will get nothing for him after it. Luke Woolston has pre-agreed a move to Salford City, and the only people who lose in that arrangement are the ones who let the contract run down.
He used to be one of the options. He is now one of the men the options are picked around, and the change happened quietly enough that only the dressing room noticed on the day.
“The manager did not use many words, and he did not need to.” Jorge Grant has his answer from Salford City; what he does with it is the next window’s story.

90 days on the estimate, and a long, private, unglamorous year of a rehabilitation nobody watches. Salford City lose a footballer; he loses considerably more than a season.
A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Ryan Graydon has written the date down.
Somebody to talk to at the next peg, a few words of the language, and a training ground that has stopped being a foreign country. It never appears in a scouting report and it decides most signings.
In brief
The dugoutThe manager plants his flag on Kelly N'Mai
Brandon Cooper was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Matthew Price after the 1‑1 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.
“The manager did not use many words, and he did not need to.” Rosaire Longelo has his answer from Salford City; what he does with it is the next window’s story.
Fleetwood Town next, and one man in the Salford City dressing room knows their training ground better than his own. The reception will tell him what they thought of him.
Salford City had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at Aston Villa, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Salford City know which stage they are at.
“I did not come here to warm up in front of people.” He is out of contract eventually, he is old enough to count the weeks, and Salford City will have to give him a reason to stay or an exit.
Salford City had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at Manchester City, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.
Elyh Harrison is 20, and Salford City have signed him for the player he will be rather than the one he is. The first team can wait; the point of a deal like this is the years it buys.
Marked 8.02 — the sort of number a correspondent writes down twice to be sure. Everything he tried came off, and what he did not try was not worth trying.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Salford City this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Sheffield Wednesday have been asked whether they would lend him. Loans are agreed quickly or not at all, and this one will be one or the other by the weekend.
The fixture the rest of the division is looking forward to more than either of the sides in it. Both know a win changes the season and a defeat does not end it, which is what makes it hard to play.
A mark of 7.20, and nobody in the ground would argue with it. He was involved in everything that mattered and most of what did not.

The view from the dugout
“We did not lose. Some weeks that is all you get, and I would rather have the point than not.” Matthew Price chose the glass-half-full version of 0‑0; the supporters left with the other one.
Ninety minutes, no goals, and the argument started before the car park emptied: a point gained, or two thrown away against Crawley Town? Both sides of it will still be going on Thursday.
The shape wanted a different profile against this opponent, which is a real football answer and no comfort at all to the man it is about. He did nothing wrong and he did not play.

Behind, and beaten by any honest reading, until minute 87. Tranmere Rovers had the points in their pocket and a corner of the ground still believed, which is generally when it happens.
“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Matthew Price after the 1‑1 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.
Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Daniel Udoh’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and Salford City needing him to play as if none of it matters.
Nobody at Salford City is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
36 points, and the rest of the division looking up. Every side that finishes first spends the season pretending it is not thinking about it, and this one has started pretending.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Salford City this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“We earned that. I asked them for a reaction and I got one, and now I want the same again on Saturday.” Matthew Price on a 1‑0 afternoon that pleased him more than he was prepared to show.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at Salford City, and both men came out saying it was fine.
He used to wear the other shirt. On Saturday he plays against Tranmere Rovers in this one, and whatever he says this week about it being just another game will be untrue.
Successful dribbles: 11. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
7.30, 1 on the scoresheet, and the specific comedy of a back-four player celebrating like somebody who does this every week. He does not, and that is exactly why the ground reacted the way it did.
Enoch Mastoras and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Bristol Rovers left with the points after a 1‑3 defeat that will take some explaining on the terraces.
Match24 Oct 2026
After 4 games, Salford City finally taste it again
The first defeat in 4 matches. The manager will say it had to come; the dressing room will say it did not have to come against Bristol Rovers; the supporters will say both, in that order, all week.
“The easiest signature of my career.” Kyrell Malcolm and Salford City agree another 3 years, and the manager can plan around him rather than about him.
Something was said to Enoch Mastoras and then it happened. In this industry that passes for remarkable, and the dressing room noticed faster than any supporter could.
Goalkeepers do not get to make mistakes; they get to make goals. He made one, he knew it instantly, and there was nobody behind him to make it anything else.

“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 1‑3 defeat, delivered by Matthew Price to a room that had heard them before.

Stuart Moore is still being punished for one mistake
Nobody will confirm it and the team sheets confirm it every week. One error has bought him a spell as second choice that is already longer than the error deserved.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Portsmouth have kept their man, and Salford City go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 22-year-old it feels ownership of. Kelly N'Mai has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Kelly N'Mai. 1‑0 against Swindon Town, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.

Squad14 Sep 2026
8 new faces, and Salford City are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
Fee agreed, terms agreed, and a scan that said otherwise. He goes back to Southampton; Salford City go back to the market; and both will insist there is no story here.
Everything agreed with Coventry City, everything agreed with the player; a doctor is the only person left to persuade. The photograph is a day or two away.
The phone has started ringing about Daniel Chesters again, and this time the name on the line is Mansfield Town. Salford City are listening politely and promising nothing.
7.76, and no serious argument from anybody who was there. Salford City had eleven men on the pitch and one of them decided how it went.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Matthew Price, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
He wheeled away like a man who had been carrying it for months, because he had. Salford City have their signing off the mark and one press-conference question retired.
1 for Kallum Cesay, marked 7.33, and a centre-half's name in the part of the report he normally only reaches by mistake. He will not be allowed to forget it in the dressing room for a month.
Salford City asked and Portsmouth said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
“We keep meeting, and we keep leaving the room with the same numbers we walked in with.” Another round of talks at Salford City, another week without a signature from Stuart Moore.
