The fee was agreed and the flight was looked at — and then the phone stopped ringing. New York Red Bulls moved on, Alex Bono reports back to DC United, and everybody pretends Monday is just Monday.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at DC United this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.

Silvan Hefti falls out with a teammate over standards
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
It finished 2‑1, and it was Louis Munteanu’s afternoon: on the scoresheet when it mattered, and the reason the points belong to DC United.

Riqui Puig was on a different afternoon to everybody else
8.19. There are performances a supporter describes to somebody who was not there and cannot quite convey; this was one, and the number does not help either.
“We earned that. I asked them for a reaction and I got one, and now I want the same again on Saturday.” Luca Tillman on a 2‑1 afternoon that pleased him more than he was prepared to show.

The music was off and the showers ran late. What was said in that dressing room stays there, but Saturday will publish the minutes.

The view from the dugout
“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 1‑4 defeat, delivered by Luca Tillman to a room that had heard them before.
1 error, one goal, and a night in front of the same three seconds. He will see it tonight, tomorrow and probably in February, and everybody who has played knows exactly which frame he keeps stopping on.
Nobody will confirm this and nothing else explains the last month of selections. A costly error buys a player a period of being second choice that is always longer than the error was.
He is the name in every column and on every phone-in, which is a heavy thing to carry at any age. Some footballers thrive on it; others are quietly finished by it.
Louis Munteanu was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
A 1‑0 win over Chicago Fire, earned rather than given, and the sort of afternoon that sends everyone home talking about next week instead of this one.

Clubs make promises constantly and the page usually only hears about them when they are broken. This one was honoured, and the dressing room noticed that faster than any supporter did.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
Chances created: 7. Nothing on the scoresheet and everything in the match: the pass before the pass, over and over, until the defence stopped guessing right.
Two goals and a mark of 8.85 to go with them. Strikers are judged on afternoons like this one and remembered for far fewer of them than people imagine.
He is going to Minnesota United FC, the club has $3.4M it did not have on Friday, and the phone-ins have already decided how they feel about that. Selling well and selling somebody they loved are not the same skill.
Minnesota United FC pay $3.4M, and the deal is done. The number reads well on a balance sheet; whether it reads well on the pitch is next season's question.
The deadline has passed and the squad is the squad. 6 arrived, 6 left, and everything else printed about this club last month was a rumour that stayed one.
DC United have gone to FC Cincinnati with a bid, and the supporters have gone to the internet with an opinion about it. Whether either changes anything is up to the selling club.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at DC United this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Some transfers need a press campaign. This one needed a shirt with the old number on it. Earl Edwards Jr. is a DC United player again, and the town has its story of the summer.

The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Corey Baird. 3‑1 against Charlotte Football Club, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
Real Salt Lake paid $8.9M and DC United took it, which is the whole story in one sentence. The longer version involves a wage budget and will be told all season.
Tai Baribo has gone, the accounts have $8.9M in them, and the supporters have the feeling of having been sold something themselves. Good business and a good decision are not always the same thing.
Minnesota United FC pay $3.2M, and the deal is done. The number reads well on a balance sheet; whether it reads well on the pitch is next season's question.
Louis Munteanu was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Atlanta United FC paid $440.0K and DC United took it, which is the whole story in one sentence. The longer version involves a wage budget and will be told all season.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Silvan Hefti was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
DC United asked and San Jose Earthquakes said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at DC United this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at DC United, and both men came out saying it was fine.

“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Corey Baird trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.

The clubs have agreed terms, and what remains is formality: a medical, a photograph, a signature. Nobody at DC United is pretending he will be back in the shirt.

Nobody at DC United is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. DC United know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
In brief
MarketThe clock does Sean Nealis’s negotiating for him
The offer from Bristol City for Louis Munteanu was heard out and sent back the same day. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loudly the door closes.
The clubs have agreed terms, and what remains is formality: a medical, a photograph, a signature. Nobody at DC United is pretending he will be back in the shirt.
There is no worse way to lose a footballer. Sean Nealis has pre-agreed a move away, which means every appearance between now and June is made by a man the club can no longer sell, and somebody upstairs will be asked why the contract was allowed to get here.
Louis Munteanu was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
The phone has started ringing about Gabe Segal again, and this time the name on the line is Morelia. DC United are listening politely and promising nothing.
5 matches without a win, and then this, against Toronto FC. Relief is a strange noise in a football ground and it was the only noise at the end.

The goal that put Toronto FC ahead was still being replayed on the concourse when DC United equalised, 2 minutes later. Leads are only worth what you do with them.
Cup ties wait for somebody to seize them, and Romain Gall obliged against Colorado Rapids. 1‑1 on the night, and the name in the next round’s hat is DC United.
A shoot-out is remembered by its ending, and this one ends with Sean Johnson: 1 kept out, and a set of supporters who will describe every one of them for the next twenty years.
Louis Munteanu and a teammate went at it, and not about football. Training grounds are small places and a long season makes them smaller.

Words at DC United training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Tai Baribo is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Ajax have kept their man, and DC United go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
A point taken on 102 minutes is worth exactly one point and considerably more than that to a dressing room. This side does not stop, which is a reputation worth more than the result.
