Cup ties wait for somebody to seize them, and Ebere Eugene obliged against Partizan. 2‑1 on the night, and the name in the next round’s hat is Dubočica.
Position 16 and 8 points, and the table gets read bottom-up in this part of town. The calendar has stopped being a schedule and started being a countdown.
There were 9 saves in it, and at least three that had no business being saves at all. The ten outfield players owe him a drink and they know it.

Filip Halabrin, 20, plays like he has been here for years — 7.76
A mark of 7.76 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 20-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
The instruction has come from upstairs rather than from the dugout, which is the version of this conversation no manager enjoys. Somebody in that squad is now available whether the man who picks the team thinks so or not.
Every club pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time it has been tried.
He is 20 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.

Yevhene Pavlov wins it after the whistle should have gone
92 minutes played. Yevhene Pavlov found the finish in time that only existed because of earlier delays, and Loznica went from a point to nothing inside one movement.
Aleksa Ćelić and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
At 22 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
“We earned that. I asked them for a reaction and I got one, and now I want the same again on Saturday.” Marko Nastasic on a 1‑0 afternoon that pleased him more than he was prepared to show.
Aleksa Ćelić was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
“I pick players who do the work. All of it.” No name was spoken; every camera still turned to Yevhene Pavlov, and the manager let it.

Words at Dubočica training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Tony is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Clubs make promises constantly and the page usually only hears about them when they are broken. This one was honoured, and the dressing room noticed that faster than any supporter did.
7.62, and no serious argument from anybody who was there. Dubočica had eleven men on the pitch and one of them decided how it went.

The view from the dugout
“We did not lose. Some weeks that is all you get, and I would rather have the point than not.” Marko Nastasic chose the glass-half-full version of 0‑0; the supporters left with the other one.
The crowd waited for a goal that never came. Jedinstvo Ub defended in numbers and left with what they came for, and the two sides could be playing still without troubling a scorer.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Dubočica this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“Some mornings you wake up and you are still a long way from everything you know.” It is not the football and it never was; Dubočica are dealing with a man who wants a different country.
It is not much of a headline and it is the reason players believe the next promise. Dubočica told Dragan Kokanović something would happen and then it happened, which in this industry passes for remarkable.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Luka Janković was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.

14 new faces, and Dubočica are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
Every manager keeps a short list in his head of the men he wants on the pitch when the stakes rise, and it is never published. The team sheets for the big afternoons say Strahinja Luković is on it.
He used to wear the other shirt. On Saturday he plays against Jedinstvo Ub in this one, and whatever he says this week about it being just another game will be untrue.
Position 16 and 4 points, and the table gets read bottom-up in this part of town. The calendar has stopped being a schedule and started being a countdown.
6 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
Dealt with internally, which is the phrase a club uses when it would rather nobody asked twice. He will be fined, he will apologise, and he will play on Saturday.
Every club in football pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time somebody has tried it.
“I have given this everything, but my family is not here and neither am I, not really.” A footballer can be coached out of bad form. Nobody has ever been coached out of this, and Dubočica know it.
It involved Filip Halabrin, it was loud enough to reach the car park, and it was over by lunch. Dressing rooms run hot; the ones that should worry you are the silent ones.
Viktor Živojinović and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Successful dribbles: 18. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Luka Janković was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
Every signing waits for it and every press conference asks about it until it comes. It has come, Dubočica have their man off the mark, and the second one is always easier.

“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 0‑1, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
He is doing his job and he is not settling. Dubočica were supposed to be a step up in his own reckoning, and his own reckoning has been adjusted since he arrived.
Beaten 1‑3, and beaten fairly. The manager kept his words short afterwards, which was probably wise.

He wheeled away like a man who had been carrying it for months, because he had. Dubočica have their signing off the mark and one press-conference question retired.
4 attempts, none of them in. He got into the right places all afternoon, which is the hard part, and did the easy part badly — and that is the version of a bad day a manager can live with.
Where he used to play does most of his talking for him at Dubočica. The room defers to it, the kids study it, and the only thing that can puncture it is a bad month.
The bid was some way short and Dubočica did not need long over it. Nobody in the game reads a first refusal as the end of anything.

Dubočica close the window on a squad of their own making
25 in and 14 out, and no more changes for months. The manager has what he has, the supporters have their opinion of it, and the table will have the last word.
The demotion a club never announces and a dressing room always notices. Veljko Jocić is further from the side than he was, and the reason will not be given until he asks.
Four or five weekends of consistency, judged against everybody in the division doing his job. Filip Halabrin has come out of that comparison in the side, and Dubočica have had the benefit of every one of those afternoons.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
Dubočica spent a month trying to move him and nobody rang back. He trains with a squad that has told him where he stands, and both sides start counting down to the next one.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Filip Halabrin was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
Behind, and beaten by any honest reading, until minute 89. Trayal Kruševac had the points in their pocket and a corner of the ground still believed, which is generally when it happens.
Aleksa Ćelić and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
It finished 1‑1, and it somehow always looked like it would. One of those afternoons where the table moves less than the tempers.

Nobody at Dubočica will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.
A 2‑0 win over TSC, a place in the next round, and the quiet arithmetic every supporter does on the walk home: how many more until a final?

A brace, and Fei Ernanduo takes the afternoon — 7.92
There is a particular kind of quiet from an away end watching one man score twice. Fei Ernanduo provided it, and the 7.92 beside his name is if anything generous to everybody else.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the team. 6 saves, several of them the sort nobody expects to see stopped, and a scoreline that flatters everybody in front of him.
Viktor Živojinović was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Successful dribbles: 20. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Dubočica asked and Partizan said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
“We were not good enough today and I am not going to dress it up.” Marko Nastasic after 0‑2, in the tone of a man who knows the next question and does not intend to answer it.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Dubočica this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.

Luka Janković was on a different afternoon to everybody else
8.04. There are performances a supporter describes to somebody who was not there and cannot quite convey; this was one, and the number does not help either.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Dubočica know which stage they are at.
“We are a long way apart, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.” Neither side is close, and the calendar is not on the club's side.

“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Marko Nastasic after the 1‑1 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.
There is a version of every career where the player ends up somewhere he chose rather than somewhere that chose him. Obren Cvijanović is living that version at Dubočica, and it tends to show in the first month.
Viktor Živojinović and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 20-year-old it feels ownership of. Veljko Jocić has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Strahinja Rajkovic is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
The academy exists for exactly this morning. Sinisa Mitrovic has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.

Minute 91, against FAP Priboj, and a goal that felt like a win to everybody who had stayed. It was a draw. Nobody leaving the ground will describe it as one.
A loan enquiry to Radnik Surdulica: cover, or a look at somebody the club cannot afford to buy yet. Either way the answer will come back inside the week.
