7 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at FC Bacău this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Every club pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time it has been tried.

“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 0‑2 defeat, delivered by Bogdan Iancu to a room that had heard them before.
2 in front and in complete control, and it finished with CS Dinamo Bucharest the happier side. There is no version of this afternoon that FC Bacău will enjoy reviewing.
6 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the team. 6 saves, several of them the sort nobody expects to see stopped, and a scoreline that flatters everybody in front of him.
Marked 7.52. There is a kind of forward whose value only shows up when you count what he was involved in rather than what he finished, and this is the day that argument makes itself.
Marked 8.12 — the sort of number a correspondent writes down twice to be sure. Everything he tried came off, and what he did not try was not worth trying.
Successful dribbles: 17. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 2‑3, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
Something was said to Andres Sfaiţ and then it happened. In this industry that passes for remarkable, and the dressing room noticed faster than any supporter could.
Matei Goga and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
It is not much of a headline and it is the reason players believe the next promise. FC Bacău told Alin Toşca something would happen and then it happened, which in this industry passes for remarkable.
“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 0‑2, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 20 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
Matei Goga and a teammate went at it, and not about football. Training grounds are small places and a long season makes them smaller.

8 new faces, and FC Bacău are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Vlăduţ Cimbru trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
“I did not come here to warm up in front of people.” He is out of contract eventually, he is old enough to count the weeks, and FC Bacău will have to give him a reason to stay or an exit.
A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Ionuţ Chirilă has written the date down.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 1‑2 Bogdan Iancu left the room before anybody could ask which.
He used to be one of the options. He is now one of the men the options are picked around, and the change happened quietly enough that only the dressing room noticed on the day.
At 21 he is doing things this season that he could not do last season, and doing them every week. Form comes and goes; this has stayed long enough to be called something else.
Romario Moise and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Successful dribbles: 17. There is a particular sort of despair on a full-back's face by the seventieth minute, and it was on display.

The view from the dugout
“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 0‑1 defeat, delivered by Bogdan Iancu to a room that had heard them before.
Every manager keeps a short list in his head of the men he wants on the pitch when the stakes rise, and it is never published. The team sheets for the big afternoons say Gabriel Dănuleasă is on it.
Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Gabriel Dănuleasă’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and FC Bacău needing him to play as if none of it matters.
FC Bacău asked and Teplice said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
Romario Moise was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
At 34 he has taken a place rather than been given one, and somebody else has to find something to say about it. FC Bacău have a decision that made itself.
The list is a quiet document with a loud meaning. Alexandru Aftanache may talk to anybody who asks, and everybody at the club understands what that means.
Nobody at FC Bacău is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Corvinul Hunedoara have kept their man, and FC Bacău go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
Minute 89, against Chindia Târgoviște, and a goal that felt like a win to everybody who had stayed. It was a draw. Nobody leaving the ground will describe it as one.

A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
It needed Andrei Pavel to find the net to bring anything home at all: 1‑1 against Chindia Târgoviște, and half the dressing room will call it a point won.
“There are things I liked and things we will be doing on Tuesday until they are right.” 1‑1, and a manager who had already decided what Tuesday looked like.
Voluntari next, and one man in the FC Bacău dressing room knows their training ground better than his own. The reception will tell him what they thought of him.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what FC Bacău can pretend not to have heard.
The deadline has passed and the squad is the squad. 18 arrived, 0 left, and everything else printed about this club last month was a rumour that stayed one.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at FC Bacău this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Farul Constanța have kept their man, and FC Bacău go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
Not a new contract, not a new number: a new place in the manager’s thinking, which is the only promotion in football that actually matters. Alin Toşca has moved up it.
Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. FC Bacău will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.
The board had gone up, the arguing had started, and then the ball was in the net in the 90th minute. Sepsi OSK will replay every second of the added time for a week.
The hardest thing about being 21 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Andres Sfaiţ did not need any: 7.63, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.
A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. FC Bacău have done the hard part with Farul Constanța, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
FC Bacău asked and Zeleznicar Pancevo said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
He is 21 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Matei Goga was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
1 kept out in the shoot-out, and a stadium that will still be describing them in twenty years. A goalkeeper only needs one of these to be remembered forever.
Headers, blocks, tackles, interceptions — 24 of them, and not one goal behind him. The sort of performance that never makes a highlight reel and wins football matches.
Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Petrolul Ploiești have kept their man, and FC Bacău go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
A midfielder is measured on whether the team functions when he is on the pitch, which is nearly impossible to see and completely obvious in retrospect. 16 actions, 6.84, and a manager who will not be substituting him again in a hurry.
FC Bacău asked and Arka Gdynia said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.

6 signings in three months. Every one of them may be an upgrade and the team can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild that never appears in the transfer-window verdicts.
FC Bacău asked and Rapid Bucharest said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Sergiu Ratiu is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.

There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Dragos Maxim has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.

At 20 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
Farul Constanța have been asked whether they would lend him. Loans are agreed quickly or not at all, and this one will be one or the other by the weekend.
A loan enquiry to FK Csíkszereda: cover, or a look at somebody the club cannot afford to buy yet. Either way the answer will come back inside the week.
