The deadline has passed and the squad is the squad. 9 arrived, 3 left, and everything else printed about this club last month was a rumour that stayed one.
It is the most legitimate ambition in the sport and the hardest for most clubs to satisfy. João Marcelo wants continental football; whether Itabaiana can provide it is a question about the next two seasons, not about him.

Itabaiana asked and Gabala said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
Every club pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time it has been tried.
Successful dribbles: 14. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
The hardest thing about being 19 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. João Borne did not need any: 7.76, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.

The deal with Athletico Paranaense is done in every sense but the one that puts him on the pitch. Nothing goes wrong at this stage, except on the occasions when it does.
Boards get told what they have done wrong for years and hear nothing on the days they get it right. This is one of those days: João Marcelo from Cruzeiro for $2.1M, and a ticket office having a very good morning.

A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. Itabaiana have done the hard part with Cruzeiro, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
Itabaiana had done everything except persuade the man himself. He stays at São Paulo, and the manager goes back to the drawing board with the money still in the bank.
Everybody saw it before anybody said it. At 35 the numbers say 3 points down on what he was, and the question for Itabaiana is how to handle a man they owe a great deal.

The academy exists for exactly this morning. João Soares has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.
Minute 94, against Londrina, and a goal that felt like a win to everybody who had stayed. It was a draw. Nobody leaving the ground will describe it as one.
The system has changed and his position has not. A footballer can improve his form; he cannot improve the manager’s formation, and that is the whole of the problem.
It finished 1‑1, and it somehow always looked like it would. One of those afternoons where the table moves less than the tempers.

The view from the dugout
“We did not lose. Some weeks that is all you get, and I would rather have the point than not.” Guilherme Xavier chose the glass-half-full version of 1‑1; the supporters left with the other one.
There is a particular kind of quiet from an away end watching one man score twice. Rodolfo provided it, and the 8.93 beside his name is if anything generous to everybody else.
At 33 he is supposed to be managing his minutes. Instead he was marked 8.12 and looked, for ninety minutes, exactly like the player everybody remembers.
Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. Itabaiana will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.

Nobody left the Itabaiana dressing room in a hurry
The door stayed shut a long time after the final whistle. What was said in there is between them; whether it worked is between them and Saturday.
Successful dribbles: 16. Every time he got the ball somebody had to make a decision, and every time the decision was wrong.

10 new faces, and Itabaiana are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑3 Guilherme Xavier left the room before anybody could ask which.
0‑5 against Ponte Preta, and no complaints that would survive the replay. The manager spoke about character afterwards; the terraces used shorter words.
6 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
6 matches, no goals, and a training ground that has tried everything. It will end — droughts always do — but nobody at Itabaiana can tell you which week it ends in.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Itabaiana this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
At 16 he is doing things this season that he could not do last season, and doing them every week. Form comes and goes; this has stayed long enough to be called something else.

Lucas Mineiro falls out with a teammate over standards
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
There is a version of every career where the player ends up somewhere he chose rather than somewhere that chose him. Igor Guilherme is living that version at Itabaiana, and it tends to show in the first month.
5 games without scoring. Strikers stop looking up, midfielders take the extra touch, and every shot that clears the bar is followed by a groan that has been building since the last goal.

The academy exists for exactly this morning. Henrique Tavares has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Pedro Rangel is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
“The manager did not use many words, and he did not need to.” Antônio Fernandes has his answer from Itabaiana; what he does with it is the next window’s story.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Antônio Fernandes trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
The shrug has gone, the language is coming, and he now argues in training like somebody who expects to be here next year. Half a signing's value is this and none of it appears on a fee.
4 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
4 matches, no goals, and a training ground that has tried everything. It will end — droughts always do — but nobody at Itabaiana can tell you which week it ends in.
0‑1 to Anápolis, and no complaints worth printing. The performance asked for nothing more than it got.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑1 Guilherme Xavier left the room before anybody could ask which.
A month is long enough that nobody gets in by accident. Gustavo Cintra is in the division's best eleven for it, which is a quieter compliment than an award and a more reliable one.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Rodolfo signs something — a contract at Itabaiana or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the team. 7 saves, several of them the sort nobody expects to see stopped, and a scoreline that flatters everybody in front of him.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Itabaiana can pretend not to have heard.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 16 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
The chances are being made and something is happening between the making and the finishing. 3 matches now, and the anxiety in the ground arrives a little earlier every week.
7 signings in three months. Every one of them may be an upgrade and the team can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild that never appears in the transfer-window verdicts.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 7 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.
At 16 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. Itabaiana will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.
Kauã Costa is 20, and Itabaiana have signed him for the player he will be rather than the one he is. The first team can wait; the point of a deal like this is the years it buys.
15 defensive actions and a clean sheet at the end of them. A defender's afternoon can only be told by what did not happen, which is why nobody makes a highlights package out of one and every manager in the division would take it.
“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Guilherme Xavier after the 0‑0 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Paulo Lima is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Felipe Rocha is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
“We were not good enough today and I am not going to dress it up.” Guilherme Xavier after 0‑1, in the tone of a man who knows the next question and does not intend to answer it.
Somebody else has been better, the manager has said so with a team sheet, and there is no argument to be had. He will get the shirt back the only way it can be got back.
The shape wanted a different profile against this opponent, which is a real football answer and no comfort at all to the man it is about. He did nothing wrong and he did not play.
“Nobody outside is coming to save us.” It was short, it was not comfortable, and by all accounts the Itabaiana squad were quieter afterwards than they had been all season.
Next up on the road: Figueirense, position 19. The supporters who go will talk about it all week and the ones who do not will check their phones at ten to five.
In brief
SquadQuestions about Pedro Rocha on the training pitch
Jefferson Paulino was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
At 14 he is being measured against the rest of the division's kids and coming out in front. The senior version of this award is where the club would like this to lead.
Guarani next, and one man in the Itabaiana dressing room knows their training ground better than his own. The reception will tell him what they thought of him.
Successful dribbles: 32. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.

Luiz Nogueira, 14, plays like he has been here for years — 7.77
A mark of 7.77 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 14-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Itabaiana this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
A 1‑0 win over Ypiranga, earned rather than given, and the sort of afternoon that sends everyone home talking about next week instead of this one.

A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
Luiz Nogueira is 14, and for one weekend he was the best of everybody his age in the division. Nobody should build a career on it and everybody quietly does.
There is an age at which every good afternoon gets described as a throwback, which is unfair and also accurate. 7.87 at 34, and nobody on the pitch was better.
He is 14 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 20 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.
0‑9 to Náutico, and it was every bit as bad as the number suggests. There are defeats you argue about and defeats you apologise for; this was the second kind.
It finished 0-10. A cup exit is a disappointment; this was a public dismantling, and the difference between the two is the number of people who will still be talking about it in August.

Defending was optional and nobody took up the option. 9 goals between Itabaiana and Náutico, and not one of the people who paid to be there will ask for the money back.
A 0‑7 beating by ABC was the sort of result that empties a stadium long before the final whistle.

The ground has had enough
“We travel everywhere and we get this.” 9 of the 15 senior players heard it walking off, and the ones who did not hear it were not playing.
Match8 Aug 2026
Nobody could stop scoring
7 goals. Both benches spent the second half looking at each other rather than at the pitch. Purists will complain about Itabaiana and ABC in equal measure; everybody else had a wonderful time.
Criciúma will keep picking him until June and will get nothing for him after it. Bruno Moura has pre-agreed a move to Itabaiana, and the only people who lose in that arrangement are the ones who let the contract run down.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Luiz Nogueira is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
The academy exists for exactly this morning. Willian Peixoto has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.

“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 1‑3, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
