Daniel Costa damages knee ligaments — 111 days out
The words a physio says slowly. 111 days is what the club will announce and everybody who has heard this diagnosis before knows the number is the least of it: the knee comes back before the player does.
What was said behind closed doors has now been said in front of a microphone. Everybody at Maracanã can do the arithmetic, including the man it is aimed at.
Terms are settled between the clubs and the rest is paperwork and a photograph. Around Maracanã they have already started talking about him in the past tense.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Maracanã, and it is not being withdrawn.
The 88th minute, half the ground already edging towards the exits, and Jean Gabriel decided nobody was going anywhere. Trem had no time left to answer.

0 in and 1 out, and no more changes for months. The manager has what he has, the supporters have their opinion of it, and the table will have the last word.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Maracanã this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
13 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
Alan Maimo was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Maracanã have made the call to Ferroviária. No fee, a share of the wages, and a spare shirt in the position where the squad has been thinnest all season.
7.54, 1 on the scoresheet, and the specific comedy of a back-four player celebrating like somebody who does this every week. He does not, and that is exactly why the ground reacted the way it did.
Bruno Camilo and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Maracanã asked and Corinthians said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
Every club in football pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time somebody has tried it.

The hardest thing about being 21 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Emerson Buiu did not need any: 7.73, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.

“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑1 Renato Nogueira left the room before anybody could ask which.

Nobody at Maracanã is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
Form comes and goes; this has not gone. Matheus Menezes is 19, and the version of him training now would not have got into the side he was in a year ago.
The shirt still fits. Vinícius Canindé is back at Maracanã, and half the ground remembers him in these colours already. Some signings need selling to the town; this one sold itself.
Glaybson was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Everybody at Maracanã saw it before anybody said it, which is how this always goes. At 39 the decline is real and measurable — 3 points — and the only question left is how the club handles somebody it owes a great deal to.
There is a level at which a footballer stops being tested and starts being contained, and he reached it some time ago. Maracanã know it, and so does everybody who watches him.
Footballers are asked about their boyhood club so often that nobody listens to the answer. Vivico has just signed for Maracanã, and for once the answer mattered.
Nobody makes a documentary about a hamstring and everybody in the game fears one. Maracanã will be careful with the return date, because the second one is always worse than the first.
The clubs had agreed and the player had not. A snub, and a public one: another club keep him, and the supporters here are left wondering what he had heard about the place.
Glaybson and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Signings arrive with a picture of the club in their head, and this one’s picture was bigger than the building. He will play well and he will be gone, in that order, and everybody knows it.
At 36 he is supposed to be managing his minutes. Instead he was marked 8.13 and looked, for ninety minutes, exactly like the player everybody remembers.
Form comes and goes; this has not gone. Diego Sabando is 21, and the version of him training now would not have got into the side he was in a year ago.
It happens to all of them and it is still the hardest paragraph a local paper has to write. 36 years old, 3 points down on where he was, and a body that has started charging interest on a career.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Cleyton. 2‑1 against Tocantinópolis, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
Successful dribbles: 18. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
22 signings in three months. Every one of them may be an upgrade and the team can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild that never appears in the transfer-window verdicts.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Renato Nogueira, on a 2‑1 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Maracanã this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
The chances are being made and something is happening between the making and the finishing. 3 matches now, and the anxiety in the ground arrives a little earlier every week.
He is not being dropped. There is simply nowhere in the formation Maracanã are playing to put a man who does what he does, which is a harder thing to be told than any team sheet.
“We are a long way apart, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.” Neither side is close, and the calendar is not on the club's side.

“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 0‑1 defeat, delivered by Renato Nogueira to a room that had heard them before.
Nobody at Maracanã is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Bruno Morais’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and Maracanã needing him to play as if none of it matters.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Márcio Assis has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.

“We did not lose. Some weeks that is all you get, and I would rather have the point than not.” Renato Nogueira chose the glass-half-full version of 0‑0; the supporters left with the other one.
The clubs had agreed and the player had not. A snub, and a public one: another club keep him, and the supporters here are left wondering what he had heard about the place.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Maracanã this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
A decision that decides nothing on the pitch and everything in the room. The manager has said, without saying it, whose voice he wants heard when his own is not there.
A new face in his position and a shirt he thought he owned suddenly up for discussion. Maracanã have promised nothing, which is what clubs promise at this stage.
The most common injury in the game and the most rushed back from. Maracanã will quote 18 days and will be careful with it, because the second one is always worse than the first.
Bruno Morais was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.

He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Maracanã know which stage they are at.

16 new faces, and Maracanã are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
The team sheet says it in public every week until it changes. The only version of being dropped a footballer cannot argue with, and the one he takes hardest.
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
There is a particular kind of quiet from an away end watching one man score twice. Zé Artur provided it, and the 9.23 beside his name is if anything generous to everybody else.
Footballers are asked about their boyhood club so often that nobody listens to the answer. Jean Gabriel has just signed for Maracanã, and for once the answer mattered.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Maracanã this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
He is 23 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
He is doing his job and he is not settling. Maracanã were supposed to be a step up in his own reckoning, and his own reckoning has been adjusted since he arrived.
There is a level at which a footballer stops being tested and starts being contained, and he reached it some time ago. Maracanã know it, and so does everybody who watches him.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the team. 24 saves, several of them the sort nobody expects to see stopped, and a scoreline that flatters everybody in front of him.
0‑17 against Sampaio Corrêa, and no complaints that would survive the replay. The manager spoke about character afterwards; the terraces used shorter words.
Defending was optional and nobody took up the option. 17 goals between Maracanã and Sampaio Corrêa, and not one of the people who paid to be there will ask for the money back.
Defending was optional and nobody took up the option. 7 goals between Maracanã and Goiás, and not one of the people who paid to be there will ask for the money back.
The door stayed shut a long time after the final whistle. What was said in there is between them; whether it worked is between them and Saturday.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑17 Renato Nogueira left the room before anybody could ask which.
Signings arrive with a picture of the club in their head, and this one’s picture was bigger than the building. He will play well and he will be gone, in that order, and everybody knows it.
7 goals in one match, Beto on the scoresheet, and a scoreline that will look like a misprint. Neutrals could not have asked more of Maracanã and Imperatriz.
The academy exists for exactly this morning. Rodrigo Porto has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Sérgio Tavares is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Danilo Queiroz has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.

One of our own: Zico joins the Maracanã first team
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Zico is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
“We were not good enough today and I am not going to dress it up.” Renato Nogueira after 1‑6, in the tone of a man who knows the next question and does not intend to answer it.
