Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. Rio Branco will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.

A place in the month's best eleven for Lucas Macedo
Four or five weekends of consistency, judged against everybody in the division doing his job. Lucas Macedo has come out of that comparison in the side, and Rio Branco have had the benefit of every one of those afternoons.
3‑0, and the margin flattered nobody — it could have carried another goal or two without complaint. Afternoons like this are why people keep coming.

Paulo Roberto, 21, plays like he has been here for years — 7.84
A mark of 7.84 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 21-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
7.17, 1 on the scoresheet, and the specific comedy of a back-four player celebrating like somebody who does this every week. He does not, and that is exactly why the ground reacted the way it did.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Rio Branco can pretend not to have heard.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Rio Branco this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
At 19 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
There is a version of this player everybody suspected was in there, and on this evidence it is. 8.39, and no argument anywhere in the ground.

12 new faces, and Rio Branco are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
In brief
The dugoutThe manager’s verdict
The dugoutThe manager makes an example of Caio Xavier
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 8 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.

Nathan Cruz, 19, plays like he has been here for years — 7.93
A mark of 7.93 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 19-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
At 19 he is doing things this season that he could not do last season, and doing them every week. Form comes and goes; this has stayed long enough to be called something else.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Jeferson Lopes was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.

Lucas Macedo and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Everybody at Rio Branco saw it before anybody said it, which is how this always goes. At 36 the decline is real and measurable — 3 points — and the only question left is how the club handles somebody it owes a great deal to.

It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Jadson signs something — a contract at Rio Branco or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
Successful dribbles: 31. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Lucas Macedo was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Every club in football pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time somebody has tried it.
Four or five weekends of consistency, judged against everybody in the division doing his job. Jadson has come out of that comparison in the side, and Rio Branco have had the benefit of every one of those afternoons.
Rolf Feltscher is 36 and has run out of things to prove. What he has left is where to stand, when to slow it down and what to say at half-time, and none of that is on a fitness chart.
2 goals, and the second was the one that settled it. Marked 7.70, and he could have had a third with better luck at the near post.

A mark of 7.96 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 19-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
Successful dribbles: 25. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Jadson was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 21-year-old it feels ownership of. Jadson has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
They paid twice — for the ticket and for the journey — and got a 3-0 win for it. Away support is the truest kind precisely because nothing about it is convenient.
Successful dribbles: 21. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
The chances are being made and something is happening between the making and the finishing. 3 matches now, and the anxiety in the ground arrives a little earlier every week.
10 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.

The academy exists for exactly this morning. Caio Xavier has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Wesley Freitas is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
Signings arrive with a picture of the club in their head, and this one’s picture was bigger than the building. He will play well and he will be gone, in that order, and everybody knows it.

Paulo Roberto is the division's best young player this month
At 21 he has spent a month being better than everybody his age in the league, which is a different and harder thing than one good afternoon. Rio Branco will try very hard not to make too much of it.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Rio Branco this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“There are things I liked and things we will be doing on Tuesday until they are right.” 0‑0, and a manager who had already decided what Tuesday looked like.

Nathan Cruz, 19, is the weekend’s best young player
Measured against every other kid in the division and first among them. The senior award is where Rio Branco would like this to lead.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Douglas Peixoto was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
Ninety minutes, no goals, and the argument started before the car park emptied: a point gained, or two thrown away against Ceilândia? Both sides of it will still be going on Thursday.
Nobody at Rio Branco is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
The hardest thing about being 19 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Nathan Cruz did not need any: 8.31, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.
He is doing his job and he is not settling. Rio Branco were supposed to be a step up in his own reckoning, and his own reckoning has been adjusted since he arrived.
He is doing things on a Saturday afternoon that nobody around him can answer, which is flattering for about one season and a problem after that. Rio Branco will not keep him by pretending otherwise.
The system has changed and his position has not. A footballer can improve his form; he cannot improve the manager’s formation, and that is the whole of the problem.
9 signings in three months. Every one of them may be an upgrade and the team can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild that never appears in the transfer-window verdicts.
Two goals and a mark of 8.88 to go with them. Strikers are judged on afternoons like this one and remembered for far fewer of them than people imagine.
Footballers are asked about their boyhood club so often that nobody listens to the answer. Jeferson Lopes has just signed for Rio Branco, and for once the answer mattered.
0-4. Going out of a cup is one afternoon; going out like that is a week of phone-ins, and the manager will hear every one of them.

There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Richy has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.

Off the academy pitches and onto a senior team sheet at 14. The debut is the easy part; the second appearance is the one every young player has to earn.
Level with 94 minutes on the clock, after an afternoon Rio Branco had all but put away. Porto Velho will call it a point earned; the home dressing room will call it two given away, and both of them are right.
It finished 1‑1, and it somehow always looked like it would. One of those afternoons where the table moves less than the tempers.

The manager’s verdict
“I am frustrated, honestly. We did enough to win and we did not win.” Paulo Assis was not hiding it after 1‑1, and nobody in the Rio Branco dressing room was either.
