“I am frustrated, honestly. We did enough to win and we did not win.” Antônio Braga was not hiding it after 0‑0, and nobody in the Sousa dressing room was either.
Éverton Alemão was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
9 home matches unbeaten. Visiting sides arrive already talking about the atmosphere, which is usually the sign that they have half-lost before kickoff.

Sousa asked and Fortaleza said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 21-year-old it feels ownership of. Gabriel Amaral has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
“We earned that. I asked them for a reaction and I got one, and now I want the same again on Saturday.” Antônio Braga on a 2‑1 afternoon that pleased him more than he was prepared to show.
Mamady Cissé, 20, plays like he has been here for years — 7.99
A mark of 7.99 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 20-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
The clubs have shaken hands with Horizonte; the player has not yet. Personal terms are next, and personal terms are where more deals die than anybody prints.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Sousa this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
4 arrivals, an average age nobody would call a squad, and a set of parents being shown around a building their sons will spend more time in than at home. The scouting has already happened; today is only the paperwork.
A medical, a signature, a shirt held up in front of a sponsor’s board. Sousa have done the hard part with Água Santa, and the part that remains is the part supporters actually see.
Sousa asked and Ferroviária said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
Everybody at Sousa saw it before anybody said it, which is how this always goes. At 39 the decline is real and measurable — 3 points — and the only question left is how the club handles somebody it owes a great deal to.

The hardest thing about being 21 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Gabriel Amaral did not need any: 7.76, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.

The chase for Antonio Porto ended with $220.0K changing hands and Joinville out of reasons to say no. The supporters will judge the fee the only way that matters: on Saturdays.
Everybody saw it before anybody said it. At 39 the numbers say 3 points down on what he was, and the question for Sousa is how to handle a man they owe a great deal.

Sousa asked and Vasco da Gama said no without discussing a figure. It is the least ambiguous answer in football and the one clubs most often come back to test.
Marked 8.10 — the sort of number a correspondent writes down twice to be sure. Everything he tried came off, and what he did not try was not worth trying.
The deal with Joinville is done in every sense but the one that puts him on the pitch. Nothing goes wrong at this stage, except on the occasions when it does.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.

Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the whole of the defence. 6 saves, several of them the kind nobody expects to see made, and ten outfield players who owe him a drink.

“I am grateful for the games, but I did not become a footballer to be somebody else's spare part.” He wants to be at Sousa, and 0 appearances in 25 say he has earned the hearing.
Successful dribbles: 16. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Nobody will confirm this and nothing else explains the last month of selections. A costly error buys a player a period of being second choice that is always longer than the error was.

At 20 he is being measured against the rest of the division's kids and coming out in front. The senior version of this award is where the club would like this to lead.

A point taken on 87 minutes is worth exactly one point and considerably more than that to a dressing room. This side does not stop, which is a reputation worth more than the result.
Luis Maldonado was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
“There are things I liked and things we will be doing on Tuesday until they are right.” 2‑2, and a manager who had already decided what Tuesday looked like.

“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
Ninety specific minutes wanted a different sort of player, and the manager picked one. He is not out of form and he is not in the side, and both are true.
The crowd waited for a goal that never came. Penedense defended in numbers and left with what they came for, and the two sides could be playing still without troubling a scorer.
Successful dribbles: 40. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.

“There are things I liked and things we will be doing on Tuesday until they are right.” 0‑0, and a manager who had already decided what Tuesday looked like.
The crowd waited for a goal that never came. Sergipe defended in numbers and left with what they came for, and the two sides could be playing still without troubling a scorer.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Sousa, and it is not being withdrawn.
Rafael Chorão and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Sousa know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
In brief
The dugoutThe plan did not have a place for João Vitor
Fee agreed, terms agreed, medical booked. Hebert Cristian will be somebody else’s player by the weekend, and around Sousa the goodbyes have quietly begun.
At 38 he is supposed to be managing his minutes. Instead he was marked 8.22 and looked, for ninety minutes, exactly like the player everybody remembers.
The rules permit it and it stings anyway. Hebert Cristian has agreed terms with Chapecoense for the summer, and until then he pulls on this shirt as a player who has already chosen his next one.
It finished 1‑0, and it was Rafael Chorão’s afternoon: on the scoresheet when it mattered, and the reason the points belong to Sousa.

Juliano is still paying for one afternoon at Sousa
Nobody will confirm this and nothing else explains the last month of selections. A costly error buys a player a period of being second choice that is always longer than the error was.
Successful dribbles: 15. Every time he got the ball somebody had to make a decision, and every time the decision was wrong.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Antônio Braga, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
The academy exists for exactly this morning. Fábio Viana has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.

Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Sousa know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
Nobody at Sousa is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
“If we are going to be beaten, let it not be because somebody in here could not be bothered.” He stood up and said it in front of everybody, which is a thing a squad remembers about a man for years.
11 signings in three months. Every one of them may be an upgrade and the team can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild that never appears in the transfer-window verdicts.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at Sousa, and it is not being withdrawn.
At 38 he is supposed to be managing his minutes. Instead he was marked 8.06 and looked, for ninety minutes, exactly like the player everybody remembers.
At 22 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
He is not being dropped. There is simply nowhere in the formation Sousa are playing to put a man who does what he does, which is a harder thing to be told than any team sheet.
“We earned that. I asked them for a reaction and I got one, and now I want the same again on Saturday.” Antônio Braga on a 2‑0 afternoon that pleased him more than he was prepared to show.
Some afternoons a goalkeeper is the team. 6 saves, several of them the sort nobody expects to see stopped, and a scoreline that flatters everybody in front of him.
Footballers are asked about their boyhood club so often that nobody listens to the answer. Fábio Henrique has just signed for Sousa, and for once the answer mattered.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Sousa this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
“I pick players who do the work. All of it.” No name was spoken; every camera still turned to Davi Santos, and the manager let it.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑1 Antônio Braga left the room before anybody could ask which.
Nobody sells a season ticket on a signing like this. Every manager who has been through a bad October wants one anyway, and Sousa have gone and got theirs early.
0‑2 against Atlético Goianiense, and the road stops here. Cup exits are quick deaths — no second leg, no next week, just the league from now until May.
Everything agreed with another club, everything agreed with the player; a doctor is the only person left to persuade. The photograph is a day or two away.
Hebert Cristian was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
There is a particular relief in a club addressing the thing its own crowd has been shouting about. Davi Santos arrives for exactly that job, and now he has to do it.

The manager’s verdict
“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” Antônio Braga kept it short after the 1‑0 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and Sousa know which stage they are at.
Clubs spend fortunes looking for players and occasionally find one down the corridor. Cavalo is that, and the reception he gets on his first appearance will be different in kind from the one any signing receives.
There is no fee, no unveiling and no agent on the steps. Vitinho has been at this club since he was a boy and is now, formally, one of the first-team squad — which for a local readership beats any signing of any size.

The academy exists for exactly this morning. Rodrigo Guimarães has come through every age group the club runs and has now been handed a senior number, and the people who coached him at twelve will be the proudest in the building.
“Nobody here is above being told.” It was not said with a name attached, but the dressing room can count, and so can everybody who was listening.

7 new faces, and Sousa are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
Hebert Cristian and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Antônio Braga after the 0‑0 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.

João Vitor falls out with a teammate over standards
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at Sousa, and both men came out saying it was fine.
