“I have given everything here and I need a new challenge.” The request is formal, and the relationship will never be quite the same again.

Bartosz Borowski, 20, plays like he has been here for years — 8.73
A mark of 8.73 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 20-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Stal Rzeszów this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
A 3‑2 win over Polonia Bytom, earned rather than given, and the sort of afternoon that sends everyone home talking about next week instead of this one.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Marcin Kamiński was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
At 22 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
Successful dribbles: 23. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Karol Łysiak and a teammate went at it, and not about football. Training grounds are small places and a long season makes them smaller.

Words at Stal Rzeszów training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Jonathan Júnior is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
“The players deserve the credit. My job was easy today.” It was not, and everybody in the room knew it; after 1‑0, Rafal Klich could afford to be generous.
Two goals and a mark of 8.83 to go with them. Strikers are judged on afternoons like this one and remembered for far fewer of them than people imagine.
4 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
A season average of 7.03 at an age when most of his year group are still in the youth team. Stal Rzeszów know what they have, and so, by now, does everybody else.
Jonathan Júnior was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
2‑3 to Stal Mielec, and no complaints worth printing. The performance asked for nothing more than it got.

There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 21-year-old it feels ownership of. Kuba Szabłowski has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
It needed Kuba Szabłowski to find the net to bring anything home at all: 1‑1 against Radomiak Radom, and half the dressing room will call it a point won.
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 1‑1 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Stal Rzeszów this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Everybody at Stal Rzeszów saw it before anybody said it, which is how this always goes. At 35 the decline is real and measurable — 3 points — and the only question left is how the club handles somebody it owes a great deal to.

The view from the dugout
“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 0‑1 defeat, delivered by Rafal Klich to a room that had heard them before.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Stal Rzeszów this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
“We were not good enough today and I am not going to dress it up.” Rafal Klich after 0‑1, in the tone of a man who knows the next question and does not intend to answer it.
“I was told straight, and I would rather have it straight.” The manager at Stal Rzeszów has been clear about where Dominik Gujda stands, which is more than many ever get.

Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Sébastien Thill. 2‑1 against Wieczysta Kraków, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
He is 20 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Karol Łysiak trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 22 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.

Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Marcin Kamiński is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
At 20 he is being measured against the rest of the division's kids and coming out in front. The senior version of this award is where the club would like this to lead.
Every manager keeps a short list in his head of the men he wants on the pitch when the stakes rise, and it is never published. The team sheets for the big afternoons say Franco Pinho is on it.
Wieczysta Kraków next, and one man in the Stal Rzeszów dressing room knows their training ground better than his own. The reception will tell him what they thought of him.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at Stal Rzeszów, and both men came out saying it was fine.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what Stal Rzeszów can pretend not to have heard.
The hardest thing about being 21 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Szymon Łyczko did not need any: 8.13, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.

The manager’s verdict
“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” Rafal Klich kept it short after the 3‑1 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.
The injury that keeps coming back, keeps being rushed back from, and quietly costs more careers than the dramatic ones. 14 days is the estimate; the honest figure depends on whether anybody is patient.

Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Jakub Kaczówka’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and Stal Rzeszów needing him to play as if none of it matters.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Jonathan Júnior signs something — a contract at Stal Rzeszów or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
The young player of the month award goes to a 20-year-old at Stal Rzeszów who has looked like the finished article for four weekends running. The next four are the ones that decide whether he is.
Minute 98, against Chrobry Głogów, and a goal that felt like a win to everybody who had stayed. It was a draw. Nobody leaving the ground will describe it as one.
“Some decisions take a long time. This one took ten minutes, and most of that was finding a pen.” Mateusz Leniart and Stal Rzeszów agree another 3 years.
“I did not go to Wieczysta Kraków to sit and watch. I want to come back to Stal Rzeszów and fight for my place.” 8 appearances in 9 matches say the rest.

“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. Stal Rzeszów will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
Form comes and goes; this has not gone. Jakub Kaczówka is 19, and the version of him training now would not have got into the side he was in a year ago.

Not now, not at any price the club was prepared to say out loud. Bruk-Bet Termalica have kept their man, and Stal Rzeszów go back to a list with one name crossed off it.
Bruk-Bet Termalica left with the points after a 1‑2 defeat that will take some explaining on the terraces.

“We were not good enough today and I am not going to dress it up.” Rafal Klich after 1‑2, in the tone of a man who knows the next question and does not intend to answer it.
4 wins in a row changes how opponents warm up: quieter, more glances across. Runs end, everybody knows that — but nobody in this dressing room is planning for it.

Words at Stal Rzeszów training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Jonathan Júnior is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
28 games, 10 goals, and a squad option that has arrived without a fee attached. The interesting question at Stal Rzeszów now is not whether he plays but who he displaces.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. Stal Rzeszów know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
Nobody at Stal Rzeszów will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.

“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at Stal Rzeszów, and both men came out saying it was fine.
A manager forgives a bad Saturday far more readily than a bad Tuesday, because one of them he can explain and the other one he chose. The reports this week have not been good.
Public backing, and the sort that costs a manager something if it turns out to be wrong. Roberto Alves has been told in front of everybody that the shirt is his.

Hugo Pérez is 19, and Stal Rzeszów have signed him for the player he will be rather than the one he is. The first team can wait; the point of a deal like this is the years it buys.
A month is long enough that nobody gets in by accident. Szymon Kądziołka is in the division's best eleven for it, which is a quieter compliment than an award and a more reliable one.
6 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Jonathan Júnior was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
At 22 he is being sung about by people twice his age, which is an affection a signing has to earn over years and a local kid gets for turning up. It is also the hardest thing in football to live up to.
It is not much of a headline and it is the reason players believe the next promise. Stal Rzeszów told Jędrzej Grobelny something would happen and then it happened, which in this industry passes for remarkable.
Successful dribbles: 14. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
In brief
Looking aheadA test against the best for Stal Rzeszów
“Things were said to me before I signed. I am not going to repeat them, but I remember all of them.” Stal Rzeszów have not answered, which is an answer of sorts.
Jonathan Júnior was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Everybody at Stal Rzeszów saw it before anybody said it, which is how this always goes. At 35 the decline is real and measurable — 3 points — and the only question left is how the club handles somebody it owes a great deal to.
It is not much of a headline and it is the reason players believe the next promise. Stal Rzeszów told Michał Musik something would happen and then it happened, which in this industry passes for remarkable.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 22 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at Stal Rzeszów this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Every shape has positions in it and this one does not have his. Stal Rzeszów will either change the shape, change his job, or change his club, and he is waiting to hear which.
Nobody at Stal Rzeszów will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Oliwier Sławiński signs something — a contract at Stal Rzeszów or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
“I respect the manager and I am not going to sit here and pretend I am happy.” It is the most common sentence in football and it has never once been the end of a story.
4 without a win now, and the ground has developed the special quiet of a crowd that expects the worst. One scrappy 1-0 would cure most of it; that is the maddening part.
Patryk Warczak and a teammate went at it, and not about football.

Jonathan Júnior scored, and precious little else went right: 1‑2 to Wisla Krakow, and a quiet walk to the dressing room.

185% of the income goes out in wages at Stal Rzeszów
Every club in football pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time somebody has tried it.
The demotion a club never announces and a dressing room always notices. Marek Kozioł is further from the side than he was, and the reason will not be given until he asks.

The view from the dugout
“We will look at it, we will learn from it, and we go again.” The three sentences every manager keeps for a 1‑2 defeat, delivered by Rafal Klich to a room that had heard them before.
It will be explained as a change for the team and it may even be one. Nobody who has worn one believes that, and neither does the man who has just had it taken away.
In brief
The dugoutMarek Kozioł dropped after a run of poor form
The clubs had agreed and the player had not. A snub, and a public one: another club keep him, and the supporters here are left wondering what he had heard about the place.
Jonathan Júnior and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
0‑1 to GKS Tychy, and no complaints worth printing. The performance asked for nothing more than it got.

Words at Stal Rzeszów training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Krystian Wachowiak is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 0‑1, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
Jonathan Júnior was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Somebody else has been better, the manager has said so with a team sheet, and there is no argument to be had. He will get the shirt back the only way it can be got back.

The manager’s verdict
“I am frustrated, honestly. We did enough to win and we did not win.” Rafal Klich was not hiding it after 0‑0, and nobody in the Stal Rzeszów dressing room was either.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at Stal Rzeszów, and both men came out saying it was fine.
Every squad has one of these fixtures for somebody every season. This one is Krystian Wachowiak’s: the club that knew him first, the supporters who will decide in the first minute whether to applaud, and Stal Rzeszów needing him to play as if none of it matters.
Off the academy pitches and onto a senior team sheet at 20. The debut is the easy part; the second appearance is the one every young player has to earn.
