São Luiz have made the call to Nova Iguaçu. No fee, a share of the wages, and a spare shirt in the position where the squad has been thinnest all season.
Nothing is announced when this happens and everybody knows. He is a bigger part of the plan at São Luiz than he was a month ago, and the training ground worked that out before the team sheet said so.
The registration window is open and the phone has started. Between now and the deadline this club will be linked with forty players and sign three, which is the usual ratio.
“I have done everything asked of me in training and it has not changed a thing on a Saturday.” The most familiar complaint in football, and one São Luiz will have to answer with minutes or with a transfer.
“Things were said to me before I signed. I am not going to repeat them, but I remember all of them.” São Luiz have not answered, which is an answer of sorts.
4 games without scoring. Strikers stop looking up, midfielders take the extra touch, and every shot that clears the bar is followed by a groan that has been building since the last goal.
Dankler was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Position 10, 17 points, and every result so far reduced to one line. The second half of the season starts with the same squad and a different set of expectations.
Every club pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time it has been tried.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at São Luiz this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.

Words at São Luiz training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Fáider Burbano is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
3 matches, no goals, and a training ground that has tried everything. It will end — droughts always do — but nobody at São Luiz can tell you which week it ends in.
“Nobody here is above being told.” It was not said with a name attached, but the dressing room can count, and so can everybody who was listening.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑2 Rafael Correia left the room before anybody could ask which.
Ninety specific minutes wanted a different sort of player, and the manager picked one. He is not out of form and he is not in the side, and both are true.
He trains hard, says the right things and goes home to an empty flat. Nobody at São Luiz has done anything wrong, which is exactly what makes it so difficult to fix.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Kaynan. 1‑0 against Goiatuba, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
7.73, and no serious argument from anybody who was there. São Luiz had eleven men on the pitch and one of them decided how it went.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Rafael Correia, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and São Luiz know which stage they are at.
It is the least glamorous business a club does and the reason seasons do not collapse in February. Hítalo is here for the weeks when three men are injured and somebody still has to play.
12 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.
There is a level at which a footballer stops being tested and starts being contained, and he reached it some time ago. São Luiz know it, and so does everybody who watches him.
“We keep meeting, and we keep leaving the room with the same numbers we walked in with.” Another round of talks at São Luiz, another week without a signature from Émerson.
“There are things I liked and things we will be doing on Tuesday until they are right.” 0‑0, and a manager who had already decided what Tuesday looked like.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and André Guimarães was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
Fáider Burbano arrives at 34 with nothing left to prove and plenty left to pass on. Legs are a young man's currency; knowing where to stand never ages.
There is no crueller way to lose a football match. São Luiz scored in the 93th minute, the restart barely happened, and the away end was still standing when the whistle went.
0‑3 to Monte Azul, and it was every bit as bad as the number suggests. There are defeats you argue about and defeats you apologise for; this was the second kind.
10 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.
The manager wanted a different profile for this opponent, which is a real football reason and no consolation. He did nothing wrong and he did not play.
At 34 he has taken a place rather than been given one, and somebody else has to find something to say about it. São Luiz have a decision that made itself.
A strip of cloth that decides nothing on the pitch and tells the dressing room whose opinion counts. The manager has made a statement without making one.
They sit in position 16 and they will be waiting. Away form is where a season shows its true character, and this side has a point to make about its own.
He is 16 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Marked 7.78. Ask anyone leaving the ground what settled it and you will get one name, which is the only award that has ever really counted.

The manager’s verdict
“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” Rafael Correia kept it short after the 2‑1 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.
Every signing waits for it and every press conference asks about it until it comes. It has come, São Luiz have their man off the mark, and the second one is always easier.
The chances are being made and something is happening between the making and the finishing. 3 matches now, and the anxiety in the ground arrives a little earlier every week.

Words at São Luiz training over how hard people work
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Jean Santos is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Successful dribbles: 19. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
He is doing things every Saturday that nobody around him can answer. It is flattering for a season and a problem after that, and São Luiz know which stage they are at.
“There is a gap, and pretending there is not helps nobody.” Neither side has moved, and the calendar is working for exactly one of them.

10 new faces, and São Luiz are still learning each other
A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
“The supporters are entitled to be angry. So am I. We will put it right.” 0‑1, a manager saying the necessary things, and a dressing room that heard a different version of them.
“Some decisions take a long time. This one took ten minutes, and most of that was finding a pen.” Fernando Oliveira and São Luiz agree another 3 years.
