A deal that was a phone call from completion at lunchtime was dead by midnight. CRB will try again when the window opens; Krasnodar may not be selling by then.
“I have nothing bad to say about this place. I just need to be somewhere else.” It is in writing now, which changes what CRB can pretend not to have heard.
The instruction came from the boardroom and the dugout did not agree with it. Somebody will go, the fee will be called good business, and the manager will spend the season rebuilding around the space.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Martinelli. 2‑1 against Botafogo, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
Successful dribbles: 18. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
Krasnodar have accepted the money. What CRB do not yet have is the man, and between here and the photograph is a conversation about wages that both sides are dreading.
There is no crueller way to lose a football match. CRB scored in the 123th minute, the restart barely happened, and the away end was still standing when the whistle went.
“This is not anger. I have thought about it for months, and nothing that has happened lately changed my mind.” The request is on a desk at CRB, and it is not being withdrawn.
The deadline has passed and the squad is the squad. 3 arrived, 2 left, and everything else printed about this club last month was a rumour that stayed one.
Rafael Carvalheira and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
The deal with Santa Clara is done in every sense but the one that puts him on the pitch. Nothing goes wrong at this stage, except on the occasions when it does.
The clubs had agreed and the player had not. A snub, and a public one: Charleroi keep him, and the supporters here are left wondering what he had heard about the place.

$570.0K was the most the club would pay and Londrina were asking for more. Deals like this are revived in the last week of a window roughly half the time, and everybody involved knows it.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Rafael Carvalheira. 1‑0 against Santos, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
The 88th minute, half the ground already edging towards the exits, and Guilherme Estrella decided nobody was going anywhere. Inter de Limeira had no time left to answer.
A mark of 8.01 means one thing beside a twenty-nine-year-old's name and something else entirely beside a 21-year-old's. Nobody at the ground needed telling which this was.
CRB have gone to Londrina with a bid, and the supporters have gone to the internet with an opinion about it. Whether either changes anything is up to the selling club.
Successful dribbles: 23. He went past people as if he had been told there was a prize for it, and by the end the full-back had stopped pretending to try.
1 for Martinelli, marked 7.98, and a centre-half's name in the part of the report he normally only reaches by mistake. He will not be allowed to forget it in the dressing room for a month.

The approach was made and the answer came back in a sentence. There is no number on the table because there was no number that would have been enough.

CRB supporters have found a favourite in João Neto
There is a particular warmth a ground reserves for a 23-year-old it feels ownership of. João Neto has it now, and everything he does for the rest of his time here will be measured against the goodwill he was handed for free.
There is no crueller way to lose a football match. CRB scored in the 94th minute, the restart barely happened, and the away end was still standing when the whistle went.
The number the board signed off was not enough. It has been asked again and raised its own offer to $585.0K — a club that wants Yago Souza enough to be asked twice.
CRB have gone to América Mineiro with a bid, and the supporters have gone to the internet with an opinion about it. Whether either changes anything is up to the selling club.
Martinelli was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
CRB offered $28.0K; Chapecoense said it was not close. The manager will be told the money is still there for the right player, which is what managers are told.
He is 23 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
This is not cover and nobody is pretending it is. $15.0M has been paid because Martinelli is straightforwardly better than what was already here, and the club has decided to stop waiting.
5 games without scoring. Strikers stop looking up, midfielders take the extra touch, and every shot that clears the bar is followed by a groan that has been building since the last goal.
Martinelli and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
The offer went to Chapecoense this week and it is theirs to answer. First bids are rarely meant to succeed; they are meant to find out how loud the door closes.
Martinelli was the name on every phone-in, and the club has gone and signed him for $15.0M. For one week the board can do no wrong, which is a week most boards never get.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Fábio Alemão was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
$15.0M settles it between the clubs for Martinelli
Fluminense have accepted the money. What CRB do not yet have is the man, and between here and the photograph is a conversation about wages that both sides are dreading.

3 matches, no goals, and a training ground that has tried everything. It will end — droughts always do — but nobody at CRB can tell you which week it ends in.
“We are a long way apart, and pretending otherwise helps nobody.” Neither side is close, and the calendar is not on the club's side.

“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 0‑1 Igor Teixeira left the room before anybody could ask which.
Luiz Phellype was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Fábio Alemão is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
“I did not come here to warm up in front of people.” He is out of contract eventually, he is old enough to count the weeks, and CRB will have to give him a reason to stay or an exit.

“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.

A point taken on 92 minutes is worth exactly one point and considerably more than that to a dressing room. This side does not stop, which is a reputation worth more than the result.

Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Fábio Alemão is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at CRB this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Hard to beat is not the same as winning, but 6 matches without defeat is a foundation CRB did not have in the autumn.

Fábio Alemão falls out with a teammate over standards
The oldest argument in any dressing room and the only one that is genuinely about football: one man thinks another is not putting enough in. It is also the row a manager privately does not mind having happened.
Something was said to Matheus Albino and then it happened. In this industry that passes for remarkable, and the dressing room noticed faster than any supporter could.
“It is not the end of the world and it is not good enough. Both of those are true.” The manager, after a 0‑0 draw, said the honest thing and then went to say it again inside.
Nobody at CRB is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.
Luiz Phellype was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
“There are things I liked and things we will be doing on Tuesday until they are right.” 0‑0, and a manager who had already decided what Tuesday looked like.
The shape wanted a different profile against this opponent, which is a real football answer and no comfort at all to the man it is about. He did nothing wrong and he did not play.
Nobody at CRB will say this on the record and the team sheets have been saying it for weeks. There is a small group in every squad who get picked when the fixture is difficult, and he has joined it.
Another week, another link, another denial nobody quite believes. CRB know the market decides these things, not the back pages — but the back pages are louder.
Luiz Phellype and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.

A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Henri has written the date down.
They sit in position 16 and they will be waiting. Away form is where a season shows its true character, and this side has a point to make about its own.
“Things were said to me before I signed. I am not going to repeat them, but I remember all of them.” CRB have not answered, which is an answer of sorts.
93 minutes played. Mikael found the finish in time that only existed because of earlier delays, and Cuiabá went from a point to nothing inside one movement.
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Fábio Alemão is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Mikael. 1‑0 against Cuiabá, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
Marked 7.69 on an afternoon he ran from the first whistle to the last. Whatever else went wrong, CRB had the best player on the pitch.

The view from the dugout
“We controlled it. There were spells I did not like and we will look at them, but the group showed me something.” Igor Teixeira, on a 1‑0 win that he was already picking apart on the walk to the press room.
Clubs make promises constantly and the page usually only hears about them when they are broken. This one was honoured, and the dressing room noticed that faster than any supporter did.
Position 3, 29 points, and the result everyone checks first is now theirs. The word is still not being said around the ground, which is how you know everyone is thinking it.
There is an age at which every good afternoon gets described as a throwback, which is unfair and also accurate. 8.32 at 33, and nobody on the pitch was better.
It is the most legitimate ambition in the sport and the hardest for most clubs to satisfy. Rafael Carvalheira wants continental football; whether CRB can provide it is a question about the next two seasons, not about him.
3 wins in a row changes how opponents warm up: quieter, more glances across. Runs end, everybody knows that — but nobody in this dressing room is planning for it.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at CRB this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
4 straight away victories. Sides that win away are usually sides that can defend and can counter, and the table has begun to reflect what those journeys have earned.

Another one collected away from home
3 on the bounce on the road for CRB. The coaches leave early, arrive at unlovely grounds in the dark, and keep coming home with three points.
11 new signings in one window. Every one may be an upgrade and the side can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild the verdicts never mention.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Danielzinho trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
Two goals and a mark of 8.40 to go with them. Strikers are judged on afternoons like this one and remembered for far fewer of them than people imagine.
7.27, 1 on the scoresheet, and the specific comedy of a back-four player celebrating like somebody who does this every week. He does not, and that is exactly why the ground reacted the way it did.
Luiz Phellype and a teammate said things this week that will take longer than a week to unsay. It was not about football, and both of them play on Saturday.
7 goals. Both benches spent the second half looking at each other rather than at the pitch. Purists will complain about CRB and América Mineiro in equal measure; everybody else had a wonderful time.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Fábio Alemão was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.

The manager’s verdict
“That is on me. I pick the team and I picked wrong.” Managers say that when they mean it and when they need to be seen to, and after 3‑4 Igor Teixeira left the room before anybody could ask which.
The one version of being left out a player cannot argue with, and the one he takes worst. Somebody else has been better and the team sheet says so, in public, every week until it changes.
“Thirty minutes, door closed, everything said. We shook hands after.” Whatever was in the room stayed in the room, and Danielzinho trained the next morning like a man with less to carry.
He is not being dropped. There is simply nowhere in the formation CRB are playing to put a man who does what he does, which is a harder thing to be told than any team sheet.
It is never announced and it is entirely visible: the biggest afternoons of the season keep containing him. A press box works this out long before anybody at the club confirms a word of it.
It has been denied twice and printed three times, which is the usual arithmetic. Until Luiz Phellype signs something — a contract at CRB or anywhere else — this column belongs to him.
He used to wear the other shirt. On Saturday he plays against América Mineiro in this one, and whatever he says this week about it being just another game will be untrue.
A conversation in the manager’s office, and a commitment that came out of it. Promises like that are cheap to make and expensive to break, and Mikael has written the date down.
“It had gone on long enough. I would rather have it out than leave it sitting there.” Ten minutes behind a closed door at CRB, and both men came out saying it was fine.
A year in and the language has not come, the city has not opened up, and he eats alone more often than anybody at CRB would like to admit. It is showing on Saturdays.
It was not about football and everybody who saw it knows that. Two men who have to play together on Saturday said things at CRB this week that will take longer than a week to unsay.
Not a run of form — an actual step up, held for months. At 20 he is doing things at this level he could not do at the start of the season, and the coaching staff will tell you exactly which of them.
Somebody said out loud what several people had been thinking. Fábio Alemão is at the centre of it, and the squad will now find out whether the standard rises or the pair of them simply stop speaking.
Every club in football pays most of what it earns to its players. Paying nearly all of it is a different arrangement, and it has ended the same way every time somebody has tried it.
“The players deserve the credit. My job was easy today.” It was not, and everybody in the room knew it; after 1‑0, Igor Teixeira could afford to be generous.
Luiz Phellype was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.

8 home matches unbeaten. Visiting sides arrive already talking about the atmosphere, which is usually the sign that they have half-lost before kickoff.
8.12. There are performances a supporter describes to somebody who was not there and cannot quite convey; this was one, and the number does not help either.
10 signings in three months. Every one of them may be an upgrade and the team can still be worse for a while, which is the part of a rebuild that never appears in the transfer-window verdicts.
It needed Rafael Carvalheira to find the net to bring anything home at all: 1‑1 against Volta Redonda, and half the dressing room will call it a point won.
“A point is a point and I will take it, but we should have had all three.” Igor Teixeira after the 1‑1 draw, and the sentence every manager in the country said at some stage this weekend.
Nobody at CRB is suggesting he is out of form. The manager simply wanted somebody with a different set of qualities for ninety specific minutes, and there is nothing a player can train to fix that.

The view from the dugout
“We did not lose. Some weeks that is all you get, and I would rather have the point than not.” Igor Teixeira chose the glass-half-full version of 0‑0; the supporters left with the other one.
There is no complaint available here and everybody involved knows it, which does not make the walk to the bench any shorter. Form is the only currency in football that cannot be borrowed against.
Ninety specific minutes wanted a different sort of player, and the manager picked one. He is not out of form and he is not in the side, and both are true.
Somebody said out loud what several people thought about how hard another man trains, and Fábio Alemão was in the middle of it. The one dressing-room argument that is genuinely about football.
200 games in the shirt. Nobody sets out to build a record like that; it happens to a certain kind of player at a certain kind of club, and this town knows what it has.
7.72, and no serious argument from anybody who was there. CRB had eleven men on the pitch and one of them decided how it went.

The manager’s verdict
“I am not going to get carried away and I will not let them either. It was a good day. There will be harder ones.” Igor Teixeira kept it short after the 1‑0 win, which is what managers do when they are happy.
18 days on the estimate, and a long, private, unglamorous year of a rehabilitation nobody watches. CRB lose a footballer; he loses considerably more than a season.

The words a physio says slowly. 26 days is what the club will announce and everybody who has heard this diagnosis before knows the number is the least of it: the knee comes back before the player does.
The hardest thing about being 20 in a senior side is that nobody makes allowances. Guilherme Estrella did not need any: 8.00, and he looked the most comfortable man on the pitch.
Luiz Phellype was at the centre of it, and by the time it was pulled apart there were three or four others involved. Training grounds are small places and long seasons make them smaller.
He is 23 and the ground already sings his name, which is a thing that happens to local boys and almost never to signings. Everything from here is measured against an affection he did nothing to earn except be from here.
Ask anyone on the way out what separated the sides and you will get one name: Douglas Baggio. 1‑0 against Operário Ferroviário, and the applause at the whistle was mostly his.
The match ball belongs to Dadá Belmonte, whose 4 goals turned a difficult afternoon into a procession.

There is a version of every career where the player ends up somewhere he chose rather than somewhere that chose him. Caetano is living that version at CRB, and it tends to show in the first month.
He left as a boy and has come back still knowing where the away end is. Most signings have to be explained to a town; this one needed a photograph and nothing else.

A squad rebuilt inside one window pays for it in a currency nobody budgets for. The football is not worse than the sum of the players; it is worse than the sum of the players who have played together before.
